Thile announces new name for 'Prairie Home Companion'
Source: Mpls Star Tribune
Minnesota Public Radio took another major step in distancing itself from the "Prairie Home Companion" brand by officially re-naming the show that Garrison Keillor built.
Chris Thile, who replaced his idol as host last season, announced at the top of Saturday's broadcast from New York City that the program will now be called "Live From Here With Chris Thile."
"My hope is that this name captures the energy and enthusiasm that is really at the core of this show," Thile said. "?'Live From Here' is about people making beautiful things and sharing them with our audience in real time. The fact that the show is live where anything is possible is part of what makes it so special."
MPR severed all ties with Keillor late last month, citing allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a co-worker while he was running the program. Keillor has spent the past two weeks defending himself in e-mails to the Star Tribune and other news outlets.

I never listen to it any more... maybe a dozen tried and---- blechk.. I switch to our local classical music station- which is pretty darn good, and there is a great jazz station.. out of a local HIGH SCHOOL, if you can believe that..
I DO like SCIENCE FRIDAY. Ira Flatow is a riot...

(3,813 posts)I have a lot of respect for Keillor(recent allegations aside, about which I don't know enough to have an opinion), but I found that the show was getting a bit long in the tooth during his final years.
I've only tuned-into Thile's show when I happen to be in the car when it's on, but I have caught some amazing musicians, and plenty of high energy when I did. The most I have heard from Thile himself is the praise and welcome he lavishes on his extraordinarily talented guests, as befits a good host.
& to you, NRL!

(60,014 posts)One of my favorite thing about music - the arts - is that really, no one is wrong - our tastes just reflect our differences (which is a good thing!).
Hoping you have a wonderful Christmas, Happy New Year - and I hope our paths cross again in 2018!

A wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, friend!
And indeed, I hope to see you soon! Doing the same gig as last year in Asheville during March? I'll be there.

(11,024 posts)Keillor's caterwauling is what made me stop listening. Now they have one of the best bluegrass players of his generation, who has a deep knowledge of classical, roots and contemporary music, and a decent singing voice.
And they're having interesting musical guests as well.
hlthe2b
(102,282 posts)Keillor probably had the "somewhat boring but comfortable" sense going for him. I will give the current version show another chance sometime soon though. I just wish they'd picked a less unimaginative name for it.

(60,014 posts)him singing than stories, we lost interest.
No denying Thile's talent, but not at all to our tastes at all.
sweetloukillbot
(11,024 posts)I loved Keillor's stories (well, some of them - Lives of the Cowboys always kinda bugged me), but when he started singing with EVERYONE I started tuning out. The guy couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and he kept joining in with people who I actually wanted to hear (Emmylou Harris, et al.)
Thile's definitely leaning more on the musical side, which I like, so I'm cool with the show. There aren't that many music/variety shows to my demographic that I come across (Livewire is the only other one airing in my area) so I'm enjoying the hell out of Thile.
NRaleighLiberal
(60,014 posts)so the PHC music is definitely out of my listening zone - though I certainly respect his musical ability. Really high voices tend to grate on me (hence The National is more my style!)

(4,138 posts)I never really liked PHC, other than the musical acts (and I also disliked Keillor joining in on those), so replacing Keillor with Thile is a big plus for me.

(9,865 posts)Also, tried to listen to some past Prairie Home Companion shows from a few years ago both as pod casts on the station's archives and on I-tune. Could not access them. Hope that's just a glitch in my system and not that they have erased from accessibility all Keillor's work.
Where is Marge?

(2,309 posts)Was the use of the PHC expensive? That could explain the celerity in dumping Keillor and the PHC brand.

(26,044 posts)...that they would also be deleting all recordings of his past shows. Basically, he's being made into a "un-person," and PHC is being sent straight down the memory hole.

(62,416 posts)I can only take public radio in very small doses, including their supposedly highly praised weekend line up.
Feel like they are a team playing not to lose and thereby losing big time. Their news shows go out of their way not to in any way upset Republicans - or at least that is the feel I get when I listen and then turn it off.
I have tried to listen to Thile, but there is just little there. They went from substance to ephemera.
I love to listen to the radio when I work out or am involved in a task. I bought a headphone radio just for this and set it to NPR. I have since added a classical station that I listen to mostly now. I just can't listen to NPR very much anymore.

(10,303 posts)BBC World Service is IMO a decent substitute for NPR.
BBC Radio 4 Extra is great for British radio comedy, drama and other spoken entertainment without news. R4ex used to air an edited version of Prairie Home Companion known as "Garrison Keillors Radio Programme".
Yes sounds like an advert for the BBC iPlayer app. So ... give it a try.

(62,416 posts)We stream CBC, KTNF in Minneapolis for the most part on them. edit to add: have tried to find a good BBC station on the computer radio is kind of difficult. Plus to me it is kind of dry.
During the day we usually stream Free Speech TV (www.freespeech.org) for Hartmann and Stephanie.
But where we have to use over the air radio, NPR is the only acceptable choice. I hate commercials with a passion and most of the commercial radio around here is right wing or a wide variety of crappy music.
A couple years ago I added classical music to my over the air listening and have found that to be a quite pleasant alternative. I never listened to classical before this.
