Charlottesville police chief resigns after criticism of department’s handling of white-supremacist rally

The resignation of Al Thomas comes 17 days after the release of a report that was highly critical of the department’s handling of the August rally.

The 207-page document, prepared by a former U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, concluded the police department was ill prepared, lacked proper training and had a flawed plan for managing the Unite the Right rally, which ended in the death of a counterprotester.

A statement from the city indicated that the resignation is effective immediately.
