Democrat wins Va. House seat in recount by single vote, creating 50-50 tie in legislature
By Gregory S. Schneider December 19 at 3:49 PM
NEWPORT NEWS A Republican seat flipped Democratic in a wild recount Tuesday - with the Democrat winning by a single vote - creating a rare 50-50 tie between the parties in the House of Delegates and refashioning the political landscape in Richmond.
Democrat Shelly Simonds emerged from the recount as the apparent winner in the 94th District of the House of Delegates, seizing the seat from Republican incumbent David Yancey. A three-judge panel still must certify the results, an event scheduled for Wednesday.
Of the 23,866 votes cast in the Newport News district on Election Day, Yancey held a tenuous lead of just 10 votes going into Tuesdays recount.
But five hours and much nailbiting later, after painstaking counting overseen by local elections officials and the clerk of court, Yanceys lead narrowed before it gradually disappeared and then reversed, allowing Simonds to beat him by one vote. ... The final tally: 11,608 for Simonds to 11,607 for Yancey.

BREAKING: Democrat Shelly Simonds appears to win Virginia House seat by A SINGLE VOTE, according to preliminary unofficial recount results.
Would mean 50-50 split of House.
Judge panel must certify results. Legal challenge probably coming.

If you are just tuning in, balance of power in Virginias House of Delegates rests on this recount right now. Democrat Shelly Simonds is ahead by one vote after trailing behind post-election by ten votes. If she keeps this win, its a 50-50 D-R House.

(49,007 posts)You never know when the tipping point comes that may for example discourage a primary challenge or discourage a Republicon opponent in the next election.
There are band wagon effects and you don't know where the tipping point is for each individual jumping on.
Political foes and friends decide who is "powerful" or not based mostly on vote counts, but each such decision has a tipping point that we do not know.
So, ... every vote counts!

Democrats claimed a one-vote victory Tuesday after a recount in a contested Newport News-area House of Delegates race, a stunning result that would create a 50-50 party split in the House.
Republicans went into last month's election with a 66-34 majority, but a single voter in the 94th District may have given Democrats the 16th seat they needed to fully erase the GOP majority and potentially usher in a power-sharing agreement.
Heading into the recount, Democrat Shelly Simonds trailed Republican Del. David E. Yancey by just 10 votes. The unofficial results Tuesday afternoon, which still have to be finalized Wednesday by the court overseeing the recount, showed Simonds with 11,608 votes to 11,607 for Yancey.
The Democratic wave in the Nov. 7 elections surpassed even the most optimistic Democrats' expectations. Flipping the 94th, the closest of four House recounts this month, sparked a second round of Democratic elation.
