Republican tax bill is another blow to victims of natural disasters
Source: Think Progress
From catastrophic hurricanes to an endless wildfire season, Americans endured huge personal and financial losses from natural disasters in 2017. Now, people who live in disaster-prone areas should be preparing for more turbulence, this time in the form of tax legislation that will make their ability to recover from future disaster even more difficult.
As they prepare to vote on the final tax bill, Senate Republicans are expected to follow their House colleagues who on Tuesday passed a sweeping tax bill containing a provision that will harm the ability of residents to put their lives back together after a disaster.
Disaster victims currently can deduct losses that are not insured and that amount to more than 10 percent of their incomes. Under the new tax plan, deductions for personal loss from natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires would be eliminated unless the event is a federally-declared disaster.

So everyone has to sit on pins and needles to see if the sexual predator is going to decide if it is a federally -declared disaster-----------------------that to me that is a dictatorship front and center, no other way to describe what that fucker Paul Ryan has done.......................................................
But there is a solution,..........................

(12,586 posts)However, doing so doesn't directly punish Californians under the current tax code. Once Trump's "Gift to the Rich" passes he can use the issue of whether or not to declare a federal disaster (and triggering the tax write-off for victims) as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the Democrats re: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and a host of other evil GOP plans.

Texas Republicans No Votes on Sandy Aid Come Back to Bite Them
WASHINGTON Many New Yorkers and New Jerseyans serving in Congress have, for nearly five years now, kept a list of names handy to roll out at a moments notice. They call it the Comeuppance Caucus.
For some, the list is on a physical paper or bookmarked on a computer. For others, it's merely tattooed into their brains. It consists of which colleagues voted against Hurricane Sandy funding back in 2013, and its chock full of Texas Republicans.
In fact, nearly every Texas Republican who was serving in Congress at the time voted against the $50.5 billion aid bill. And now their own constituents are facing the biggest natural disaster in state history.
There is deep and lingering resentment by members of Congress who needed help in their districts when Sandy just ravaged their constituents, said former U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, a Democrat who represented Long Island until he retired last January. [U.S. Sen] Ted Cruz and others led the fight against that aid, and a lot of people said there would be a day of reckoning.
