US to send anti-tank missiles to Ukraine

Source: ABC News

By TARA PALMERI and CONOR FINNEGAN • Dec 23, 2017, 7:06 AM ET

President Donald Trump is expected to announce his approval of a plan to sell anti-tank missiles to the Ukrainian government, a move that would mark a significant escalation in lethal U.S. military support for Ukrainian forces battling Russian-aligned forces in the border region, four State Department sources tell ABC News.

If the president formally signs off, the plan will be presented to Congress for a 30-day review period where it would need to be approved before the State Department can implement it.

The sale of anti-tank missiles, which could possibly include the U.S.-made Javelin system, provoked a strong reaction from Russia on Saturday, saying it "crossed the line," and could threaten to derail Trump’s calls for better relations with Moscow.

The total defense package of $47 million includes the sale of 210 anti-tank missiles and 35 launchers. Additional supplies will need to be purchased, according to a senior State Department official.

and since it's been exported to almost 20 countries it is hardly sensitive technology at this point.

Politicians keep saying we need a "peace process." If we did that in WWII, Germany would still be shelling Britain across the Channel as we tried to negotiate its withdrawal from Morocco.

Then again, if the USSR didn't buy into it we'd be reading the latest novel written by the Parisian author Ivan Nakhinsky in the translation from the original Russian.

I'm gratified that the non-existent military solution in Iraq and Syria finally produced less ISIS (now if we could just get rid of the Nimrod that's there).

I'm not gratified that the frozen-conflict that would never be allowed to exist (and therefore doesn't exist) continues to result in dead people, civilians and soldiers, and civilian-punishing infrastructure. Infrastructure often destroyed simply for the sake of making civilians suffer.

The zinky boys need reprising. http://beta.latimes.com/books/la-ca-jc-svetlana-alexievich-20151206-story.html

Putin is already saying this an act of aggression signaling that Russia might amp up their defensive efforts and take out more of Eastern Ukraine.

I guarantee you Putin approved of this.

is this just a smoke screen with respect to the Mueller investigation?

See! We're not in league with Putin. In fact we just pissed him off by selling weapons to Ukraine.

To take action against Putin, but the CONGRESS (and quite possibly that may include some Democrats) wouldn't approve of the sale!

That trump is so clueless his senior advisors did this either on their own, or knowing that trump didn't have a clue what it meant.

"hey boss, we have a great opportunity for you to show your strength and support the friendly government in the Ukraine, ok if we send them some weapons to defend themselves?"....
