Minneapolis police remove memorial left by hate group

Source: AP

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis police have removed a memorial that a white nationalist group created to honor an Australian woman killed by a Somali officer last summer.

Police spokesman John Elder told Minnesota Public Radio News an officer cleared the memorial when the department learned it was displayed outside its headquarters.

"We cannot allow any memorial and anything like that to be put up at that location," Elder told the radio station.

The northern California hate group called Identify Evropa said on its Twitter account it put up the memorial Friday. The group helped organize participants in the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August.

Officer Mohamed Noor wasn't a "Somali officer". He was a Minneapolis Police Department officer who was born in Somalia.

This is the famous case from July in Minneapolis where Justine Ruszczyk Damond (who had called 911 a few minutes before about what sounded like a sexual assault occuring near her house) approached the police car and got shot by Noor, supposedly after she slapped the back side of the vehicle (according to one account) and then approached the driver's side of the vehicle. Officer Noor was in the passenger seat and shot past his driver partner through the open left-side window at Damond.

What's significant to me is that a white hate group (Identify Evropa) would put up a memorial for a white woman shot by a Somali-born police officer. I'm sure if it had been a different mix -- white-on-white, white-on-black, or black-on-black -- there would have been no memorial from this group.

Here's one from a more detailed news article (MPR News)

Identity Evropa, a California-based group that calls itself a "generation of awakened Europeans," referenced recent media reports about Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman's comments on Ruszczyk. Freeman told a group of union members on Dec. 13 that he does not have enough evidence to decide yet whether he'll file charges against officer Mohamed Noor, and he blamed "investigators" for not doing their jobs.

Identity Evropa, which is credited for coining the phrase "You Will Not Replace Us," labeled Noor as a "Somali-born killer." The Southern Poverty Law Center calls Identity Evropa a hate group and the Anti-Defamation League labels it a white supremacist group.

In a statement released Sunday evening, Minneapolis Mayor-elect Jacob Frey condemned the placement of the memorial outside the precinct.

"I condemn the perpetrators and their tactics in the strongest possible terms," Frey said. "Identity Evropa and those who share their values have no place in our city. Hate has no place in Minneapolis. Period."

especially her involvement at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Center, would lead me to believe she would have been appalled by this group's attempt to use her death this way.
