Trump slams FBI, Clinton for 'garbage' dossier

President Trump on Tuesday lashed out at the FBI and the Clinton campaign on the Russia dossier compiled against him and his 2016 campaign.

The dossier, a compilation of opposition research against the 2016 Trump campaign, was partly funded by Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee. It included several incendiary claims against Trump and his campaign that have loomed around his presidency.
While the research for the dossier was originally aimed at finding information on the entire field of GOP candidates, it alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow that eventually became the focus of the project.
Some Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, which has investigated witnesses in connection with the dossier, have begun to probe into the FBI and Justice Department handling of the look into incendiary claims included in the document.

(47,555 posts)Way too much. I would think he is just encouraging the FBI that much more to prove the dossier is real. I can't imagine how stupid you'd have to be to provoke the FBI.

(47,555 posts)He is using tactics that worked on little people, with no power and few resources, but will only inspire these investigative agencies to pursue him and use every tool they have to bring him down. I am sure that every snarky remark and tweet only fuels their resolve and motivates them to work harder. What a total dumb ass!

(47,555 posts)It might be better if Trump didn't realize how much they've uncovered, but I suppose it puts pressure on others from the campaign and administration to be more forthcoming out of self-preservation.
I am sure true professionals will do what must be done with or without Trump's attacks, but his childish tantrums and put downs must energize them to uncover the truth.

(8,200 posts)Trump doesn't dare criticize Putin or he will be brought down. Virtually every criticism of Russia by his own cabinet has been contradicted by Trump. Why? The logical answer is they have extremely compromising information on the Sexual Predator and Chief. I would be willing to bet that eventually the information will be released. But only when it is to Russia's advantage. Therefore it may be years before the truth is fully known.

(36,129 posts)It's apropos that Clinton, having been Secretary of State and privy to classified intel, would have the DNC kickstart compiling of info/reports on foreign cyberspying and election interference, since she was best positioned to know of reports from the 16 agencies that it had been going on for some time.
Beyond that, so what if the DNC paid for oppo research. ANYone with classified intelligence access could have kickstarted investigations of foreign cyberspying, which then would lead to evidence of aiding and abetting foreign activities endangering the interests of the U.S, corroborated by the 16 agencies, who would then have turned the info over to the FBI, who'd then determine its actionable legal scrutiny.

THREAD regarding: FBI used the Steele dossier to get FISAs

3. (It's worth noting in that previous article that Steele apparently believed that there was a cabal in the FBI *preventing* the dossier from reaching the top, and it also suggests that he contacted @DavidCornDC about its contents. But I'll let reporters sort out those details.)

6. The DOJ lawyers who help prepare the FISA applications take this VERY seriously. Like, even if you had a common-knowledge assertion, like "Country X is a state-sponsor of terrorism," they make you include a cite (preferably two) supporting it. They want every fact airtight.
7. The Steele dossier is "raw intelligence." It contains reporting from third party sources -- meaning it is basically hearsay. So the FBI can't just staple the dossier to a cover sheet that says "GIVE ME A FISA" and be done with it.
8. To use any or all of the dossier, the FBI would have to provide independent verification and corroboration of each fact that would be included in the application. This could mean first-hand witness statements, actual recordings from electronic surveillance, etc.
9. In other words, if the FBI *did* use the contents of the dossier to obtain a FISA, then by definition those contents are true, corroborated, and independently verifiable. Remember that the application is presented to an Article III judge -- a judicial check -- before granted.
10. This does not seem like the road Trump supporters want to be going down...and yet they are. It's so bizarre. And to underscore: To claim that this was a huge conspiracy is ALSO directly implicating members of the judiciary (who could be Republican appointees) without basis.
P.S. In tweet #2 *he* refers to Steele -- I was cutting down this sentence to fit and omitted him as the original referent
