Trump doubles down on false claim about repealing ACA
Source: Axios
The president this morning, rehashing his claim from last week that tax cuts "essentially" end the Affordable Care Act:

Why it matters: The Trump administration has used regulations to expand access to inexpensive, short-term plans that cover less. That could increase the effects from getting rid of the mandate.
But, but, but: Left intact from the ACA are subsidies for millions of Americans on the exchanges, essential health benefits that mandate what plans must cover, Medicaid expansion and the rules that let parents keep children on their plans until the age of 26. [Go deeper]

And for all we know, Trump's saying this because that's what his staff told him.

(54,770 posts)Mandate was not as important as it was intended because a lot of healthy people -- who didn't want the insurance -- just paid the fine, which was substantially less than the premiums.

(54,770 posts)because premiums being charged at this moment are based upon a insured base that doesn't include as many healthy people as originally envisioned in 2010.
If there were millions of healthy individuals in the ACA pool -- who could now drop out -- premiums would sky rocket. I think the current projections are that premiums might increase 10% on average because of removal of the Mandate. Heck, before the ACA, premiums were increasing annually a lot more than that.
Originally, the Mandate made sense. But, we have found out that a lot of healthy people weren't persuaded to buy ACA policies because the penalty was so low in comparison to premiums.

It all started unraveling when the Supreme Court made Medicaid expansion optional per state.
The most Republican aspect of the Affordable Care Act - making those who can least afford it and have the slightest need pay into it so it's cheaper for those who need it and usually can most afford it - is celebrated as a victory. Real idiots.

(6,932 posts)that they DUMPED Obummer care on Jan 1 when in fact they were probably some of the first who signed up for 2018 coverage during the enrollment period. Those asshats aren't fooling me for a second when it comes to THEIR money and ridiculous health care premiums.

(4,423 posts)companies now sell non-ACA compliant healthcare plans ? and if so won't that seriously screw up the market place when healthier people start seeing they can get much cheaper plans than what are available under the ACA ?
