TEHRAN, Iran (AP) The Latest on protests in Iran (all times local):

Iran has strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trumps tweet supporting a wave of economic protests sweeping major cities in Iran.
A state television report on Saturday quoted Irans Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, as saying that Iranian people give no credit to the deceitful and opportunist remarks of U.S. officials or Mr. Trump.
The economic protests began Wednesday in Mashhad. Officials say some 50 protesters have been arrested so far. U.S. President Donald Trump has tweeted out support for those protesting early Saturday.

(59,504 posts)There were riots in 2009 associated with the re-election of Ahmadinejad. Then, the goal was a more moderate government. In later years, a more moderate President, Rouhani, was was elected and re-elected. Remember how happy the western world was when he was re-elected last year? That was a move in the direction that the 2009 protesters wanted. In addition, the P5 +1 made the nuclear deal with Iran. That had started to benefit the Iranian economy, but Trump has made some European investors less likely to invest because his actions caused uncertainty.
These protests seem to be the reaction to some pretty extreme austerity measures imposed by the government. One question is whether those measures were in part related to Trump's actions. This would include BOTH any lost opportunity due to Trump's actions on the Iran deal AND the increase in bellicose statements backed by Trump, Israel and the Sunni states that could be a cause of the increase military funding.
Although 2017 is not 2009 and John Kerry is not someone Trump would listen to, his 2009 NYT oped is worth considering. At that point, he was a Senator - so importantly not part of Obama administration - so he could say and write things that he believed in that would be seen as someone close to Obama, but not something that is official administration policy. However, his warnings that the US speaking could hurt those we support seems pretty wise. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/18/opinion/18kerry.html
These protests could backfire by reducing Rouhani's support leading to a worse President. Especially if Trump et al cheer the protests on - the winners may be the hardliners and the Revolutionary Guard. The sad thing is that Trump and many of his people might not consider that a negative. It would make Iran even easier to demonize.
That may spell out the difference between Obama/Kerry et al and Trump and his people. The Obama team welcomed Rouhani as a step in the right direction and hoped that the nuclear deal's benefits might continue to move the country away from its radical (2009) positions. (Optimism, positive, green shoots of possible future democracy etc) where the Trump team sees them as irredeemable, making them comfortable with a possibility that fits their white/black view of the world.

(11,521 posts)He has no clue about what's going on around the world, won't listen to the experts who do (and in fact has fired or forced most of them to leave), and is making the US look like fools. His actions are going to weaken the US standing in the world for many many years, if in fact we can ever recover. Putin has to be absolutely loving this.

(92,372 posts)everything that President Obama did, including the Iran Nuclear Deal.
The deal was predicated on the fact that Iran would be open economically, and that has not happened since this administration is openly trying to block every trade and economic deal with Iran, and many Iranian's believe that Iran gave too much up with that deal.
If this ignoramus is not out of the WH soon, and if the Democrats do not win back at least one of the Houses in 2018, I believe the prospects for war are closer than most of us like to think.

(2,226 posts)Making an alliance with each other to get rid of America. There were leaders from NK, Pakistan, China, Russia and others including saddam Husain, who is dead now. The point Im trying to make is, if we piss off enough of the world, they may join forces and put us down. Especially with a bellicose, belligerent leader who acts like he can control the whole world. He has no vision or ability to see the consequences of his actions. They resent his interference and stupidity. Trump is putting a target on our country.

(11,949 posts)Citizens of an extremely repressive theocracy are pouring into the street, mainly against their religious master not their elected president. And now this is a bad thing? And it is all Trumps fault?
Obama condemned the conduct of Iran during the riots of 2009. And everyone thought the protesters were righteous.
I hope they manage to overthrow the religious fucks and I hope trump can find a way to help. Granted he will most likely fuck it up. But not everything and everyone that trump is against becomes my ally.
