Brutal cold torments the US, and 'the worst is yet to come'

Bitterly cold temperatures to linger for days

(CNN)...................................

The brutal chill that froze much of the country on New Year's Day will get even more miserable later this week.
"The cold is here to stay and the worst is yet to come," CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said.

More than 100 million people from Canada to Mexico are under wind chill warnings and advisories on Tuesday, according to CNN meteorologist Monica Garrett.

On New Year's Day, 90% of the US failed to warm up to 32 degrees, CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera said.

"Breaking News: It's Winter in January" has to be a bit embellished?

I live in the Deep South - even we expect it to get cold in the winter.

It snowed a couple weeks ago!

By next week we're back in the 60's plus!

Coldest New Years eve in New York in 55 years.

I live in Vermont where we expect it to get cold, expect to shovel, expect things will freeze. It was -30 here this morning. Last night entire villages had power failures, six or so right around where I live. Things are freezing that never froze before. I've been at this address for almost 18 years. Pipes never froze before, but they did last night.

Volunteer firemen were out last night in -30 temperature, going door to door in a neighboring village, looking for elderly, sick, disabled people that might need help. We're being warned. It's not just normal winter cold, it's dangerously cold. The folks I know are tough as they come. They don't whine about normal winter weather....but this is something different.

For all DUers who are having tough times with this dangerously cold weather, hang in there. We can get through this. Please check on neighbors, the elderly, anyone who might need help. Maybe shovel for someone if you're able to or help get the snow off their roof.

Trump would tell people they're on their own. We're different, we lend a hand.

when 90% of the entire US doesn't get about freezing on any given day that is news even if it is......."Winter".

Things to consider are the citrus crops in FL, vegetable crops everywhere in the south.... oh I don't know, just about any agricultural endeavor that depends on being above freezing at this time of year. I agree that it being cold in WI or ME this time of year really isn't news worthy but the temps in the south, well that's an entirely different matter.

And the adverse economic impacts of aberrant weather on the private sector depresses revenue that otherwise sustains public programs and services, resulting in cuts which disproportionately affect the poor, needy, and elderly and lower the quality of life for all.

So, there's that.

One is subjective, the other not. Seems a relevant difference to me.

Also, it seems news to me when just under 93% of the continental US experienced freezing temperature simultaneously.

But I get it... it's fun to pretend we're more clever than we may be.

The cold has penetrated far more deeply into the ground than ever, and I pity the poor work crews who have to be out in this weather repairing burst city pipes.

We're hearing from a number of friends who are dealing with frozen water pipes in their homes for the first time.

Between the ice storm and the snow on Christmas, it was quite a sight, postcard perfect. Was -30 at my son's place in Maine this morning.

Sorry to hear about your friends' frozen pipes. I'm dealing with the same thing here. Take good care and stay warm.

pipes lie on top of the ground under it. 27 degrees tonight, and we'll be running water also. On the plus side, it's pumped out of an aquifer directly under us and will drain right back in.

Not to complain to you guys up north, but this ancient aluminum box was not made for keeping warm in this weather. We've spent the day mostly in a little 10x10 sitting room that's our harsh weather fallback, feet up off a floor that reminds us that dying of hypothermia could be at least technically possible here.

Take care. Wishing you all a safe, warm night.

Most of the time it didn't get above freezing. EVERYONE was pissing and moaning (especially my sister, who I was staying with) about the cold. As if cold in December and January was unusual.

Good grief, people! It's winter! Put on another layer of clothing. Be grateful you aren't homeless.

32. WHY WINTER STORM GRAYSON IS SO UNUSUAL
Thu Jan 4, 2018, 09:50 AM
Jan 2018

Wired:

... Bombing out, or “bombogenesis,” is when a cyclone’s central pressure drops 24 millibars or more in 24 hours, bringing furious winds that can quickly create blizzard conditions and coastal flooding. ... It’s actually not that rare ... other names, like Nor’easter ...

Winter Storm Grayson started dumping snow in Tallahassee on Wednesday morning. But Grayson isn’t your typical bombogenerator. ... Grayson is expected to explode up the East Coast between now and Friday, intensifying as it makes its way from Florida to Nova Scotia, blowing record snowfalls around at category 3 hurricane wind speeds. ... “It’s a perfect alignment of the three things we look for.”

The first is a warm conveyor belt of tropical moisture, which the Gulf Stream is shuttling out of the Caribbean and right up the Atlantic coast. ...

What’s less normal is the huge subzero air mass that dipped down from the Arctic about 10 days ago, plunging the Great Lakes and Eastern US into a sustained deep freeze. ...

The coldest air on the planet just happened to slide over Northeast America,” says Huttner. “And with this incredible moisture feed we’ve now got a huge temperature contrast. By the time this thing gets up into New England we’re talking about a good 100 degrees of temperature contrast across the center of the storm. And generally speaking, the stronger the temperature contrast, the deeper the storm.”

Unlike hurricanes, ... bomb cyclones tend to reach their peak intensity when they hit New England. ... It’s also where the third thing meteorologists look for—a low pressure trough in the upper levels of the atmosphere—happens to be occurring right now. ... This is leading to faster and stronger winds than you’d typically see in a storm this time of year.

...

According to some climate scientists, this pattern is likely to repeat itself even more in the future. ... believe that the warming Arctic will leave less of a temperature difference between the equators and poles, weakening the jet stream. A weaker jet stream would allow cold air to push down, or warm air to wander north, more frequently, setting up more opportunities for a violent atmospheric showdown. ...

Others are less sure. ... notes that as you go higher up into the atmosphere, the opposite trend is true: The tropics are warming faster than the poles, 10 miles up. ... “The models are all over the place about whether these are going to get more or less intense. ...

https://www.wired.com/story/why-the-bomb-cyclone-hitting-the-east-coast-is-so-unusual/

Perhaps about the more than this, but this is obviously part of a new reality.
