GOP Rep. Bill Shuster to retire, spend final year working with Trump on massive infrastructure bill

Source: Washington Examiner

Rep. Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, will not seek re-election in November, telling the Washington Examiner that he wants to focus exclusively on working with President Trump to pass a massive infrastructure bill before he retires.

The western Pennsylvania Republican, who has held the seat since 2002, said he does not want campaigning or anything else to get in the way of helping Trump get this major piece of legislation passed by Congress in 2018. “I thought it was the best decision for me to focus 100 percent on my final year as the chairman of the Transportation Committee, working with the president and other Democrats and Republicans to pass an infrastructure bill, which is much needed to rebuild America,” Shuster said.

It was something he'd given a lot of thought to for months as he faced the final year of his chairmanship at transportation, a position his father, former Rep. Bud Shuster, held before him.

He told the Washington Examiner he could focus on working with both parties better if he didn't have to worry about running to hold his seat in a primary and general election.

owned by others outside the US-Russian oligarchs, foreign corporations. It is one where our roads, bridges, water supplies are beyond local control and where we open our protected land to exploitation.

With the passage of the tax "reform" bill we are poised to become a major debtor nation. We are about to be pressured to lower our standard of living, slash our safety net, and auction off our resources in order to pay debts.

The model is the pressure placed on nations such as Argentina and Greece to sell off assets and then "rent" them back to pay debts.

Another one that's been gerrymandered to death.

Gerrymandering is evil and it destroys democracy. The only beneficiary of gerrymandering is the incumbent - nobody else. We must end gerrymandering and Pennsylvania is one of the very worst states.

Shuster has had token opposition and always wins handily in this GOP district. He inherited the seat from his dad, Bud.

I wonder if he's worried about a serious ethics investigation due to his close relationship with an airline lobbyist and the obvious conflict of interest should Dems get control of the House in Nov?

Create the trillions in deficit then not only claim our safety net infrastructure (Soc sec, Medicare,Medicaid)needs to be drained but also our taxpayer funded and owned lands and the crumbling infrastructure ( whichthey've created after forty years of willful negligence) sold off to pay for it.

How convenient x2 that Corps will have OUR money from the Tax Plunder & their repatriated trillions to buy up OUR Country.

And how convenient x3 that Mitch McConnell's wife is in charge, both positioned so beautifully to reap billions in the ensuing slush.

And it is one of the most Gerrymandered districts you will find, Cook PVI of R+19. It is as safe a seat as the Repukes could draw up. Either another Shuster is ready to run for the seat, or someone has something on him and he will leave congress and become a lobbyist before he is put on the barbecue. I can’t imagine the Repukes being in any trouble in this district under any circumstances. Trump got 69% of the vote here. Remember, in Pennsylvania, you have Philly and Pittsburgh which are blue, and the rest of the state which is Mississippi.

Don’t get hopes up. If they lose this one, they will lose everything down to the race for dog catcher. I just don’t see it.

Post-Gazette today. The story quoted Eichelberger, a GOP state senator, saying that Shuster's polling wasn't very good right now. Shuster also barely held off Art Holvorason (sp?), a rw Tea Party kook, in the GOP primary in 2016. Holvorason then ran on the Dem ballot line, but was defeated. Apparently he wants to take another run at Shuster, but it seems like Eichelberger has his eye on this seat.

I remain surprised that Shuster's poll numbers are poor given he or his dad have represented this district for decades. Maybe the voters just didn't like him having a mistress. Stranger things have been the downfall of "safe" incumbents.

..the Pa9 District was once held by none other than Thaddeus Stephens, progressive guy for his time. He was portrayed in the movie “Lincoln” by Tommy Lee Jones.

Don’t waste your money on that movie, btw. I don’t know who writes these downer scripts, but Lincoln dies in the end.
