Orrin Hatch to Retire from Senate, Opening Path for Mitt Romney
Source: NYTimes
Senator Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, the longest-serving Senate Republican, plans to announce on Tuesday he will retire at the end of the year, rebuffing the pleas of President Trump to seek an eighth term and paving the way for Mitt Romney to run for the seat.
Mr. Hatch intends to announce his decision Tuesday afternoon via a video announcement, according to two Republican officials briefed on the plans.
Mr. Hatch, 83, was under heavy pressure from Mr. Trump to seek re-election and block Mr. Romney, who has been harshly critical of the president. But Mr. Hatch, who emerged as one of the presidents most avid loyalists in the Senate, decided to retire after discussing the matter with his family over the holidays. The veteran senator was also facing harsh poll numbers in Utah, where 75 percent of voters indicated in a survey last fall that they did not want him to run again.
Mr. Hatchs decision comes just weeks after Mr. Trump signed a sweeping tax overhaul into law, a measure that the senator helped write as chairman of the Finance Committee. The bill represented something of a capstone to Mr. Hatchs four decades in Congress and Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, even deemed it as such last month in what was seen as a subtle effort to usher his colleague to the exits.

What we want, is a Cliven Bundy type. A real embarrassment for the GOP - as well as a well-deserved headache for Bitchy Mitchy.

(21,639 posts)Just imagine the field day the press would have if an outright criminal à la Bundy were to clinch the GOP nomination!
Suffice it to say, it would our first real shot at electing a Utah Democrat to the Senate since Ted Moss (who left in 1977).

(50,560 posts)Cliven Bundy's biggest impediment to running for the Senate from Utah is that he isn't from Utah...scarily enough, a pure state's rights guy like Bundy but not Bundy Himself would do very well in a western-state election.

(21,639 posts)They get away with it because they're smart enough to field fascists who don't "look" like they are.
But make no mistake: most of today's GOP lawmakers are most definitely neo-fascist (and the few that aren't - like Susan Collins and John McCain - either go along or are on their way out to pasture).
It was a superb strategy, and very well carried out - until now. Their voters, most of them, are no longer content to vote for wolves in sheep's clothing: they are utterly radicalized are want the wolf clothing as well.
That's the chink in the GOP armor. Their base loves it; but it turns off swing voters and just enough old-school conservatives to usher in Democratic victories (case in point: Doug Jones).
I think that if the GOP is left with no choice but to elect rabid, deviant, trashy arsonists like Bundy, it could really turn the tide in our favor - and above all, show them up for what they really are.

For my 4000th post, I'm still bitching about these political hacks that are lifers on our dime. We need to stop this shit now.
Maybe for once, 45 has done some good...getting the fuckers to retire finally.

(37,748 posts)It begs the question: what then should the precise cut-off age be, and on what objective measure is that predicated on?
Or (and I find this to be more likely) will you provide no evidence to support your premise, and simply cling to vague, though trendy cliches in regards to age?
Lochloosa

(12,344 posts)One is term limits. Not a direct age limit, but it will stop people from warming the same chair for 40 years.
Or maybe we need to require a physical and mental health exam to run for election/re-election. No criteria, just a standard exam performed by a military doctor and released to the public. The voters then decide if the person is healthy enough to continue serving. I'd like to see their tax returns too.
LittleGirl
(8,287 posts)we need to get the millionaires out of Congress and have regular folks serve us.
And yes, tax returns and civic knowledge would be helpful too. Actually, I think they should have to pass a civics test or a citizenship test to become Congress members.
If we could end Citizen's United, we could have a congress that serves us and not corporations and millionaires.
RobinA
(9,893 posts)of term limits beyond the ballot box, I am fully in favor of election reform that makes it more possible for non-millionaires to run and get elected AND that will make candidates less tied to shilling for dollars when they should be governing and making decisions that aren'y paid for.

(8,287 posts)the same as your text? I have to repeat myself just reading your post and it makes me mad that I have to repeat myself these days.
What age would work? I think term limits on Congress would be fair because the POTUS has limits, why not congress?
If I senator is elected before they are 40, then they should HAVE to retire when they are 70. That's fair enough!
30 yrs in government is more than enough.
Most of us out here can't find a job that lasts 30 yrs, (or 3 for that matter) why should government jobs last that long?
rpannier
(24,330 posts)30 years in government is more than enough
Two examples out of many I could give you
1. A person joins the army at 18. Serves 16 years. Gets his Master's Degree while in the army (Navy, Air Force, Marines) and moves to the Department of Defense. Using your argument, this person should be forced to retire at the age of 48.
Would you argue that if he/she stayed in the military that at 48 he/she should be forced to retire?
2. My father graduated law school from Berkeley in 1965, at the age of 25. He got a job as a federal prosecutor with the NLRB that same year and became a judge in 1973. By your cut off, he should have been forced to retire at 55, in 1995.
That's a lot of pension money when you include every forced retiree. That's also a lot of knowledge and experience you're insisting must retire.
Would you also include that with state employees? Many states got teacher's (and other state employees) to take early retirement in the 90's because they saw it as a way to keep taxes low. So you had a lot of fifty year old people retiring in their 50's and collecting pensions It is one of the causes of the havoc being imposed on so many state retirement systems.
There are numerous flaws with 30 years in government being the cut off, since many people can get their degree in their early to mid twenties.
If your concern is people finding jobs, instead of cutting the number of government employees (which has been happening almost non-stop since the late 70's), how about expanding some of the agencies, like Justice, Interior?
LittleGirl
(8,287 posts)but I was referring to Congress members only.
You took one word "government" in my post and twisted it to include all government jobs which is not what I meant.
I meant if one is getting elected before 40, they should HAVE to retire by 70 which is older than the 'retirement' age of most companies.
Congress only. The rest of your examples don't apply to my post.
rpannier
(24,330 posts)I didn't twist it.

(11,841 posts)But I agree with you; term limits for Congress. But also for every state
has term limits, why not Congress! Of course!
