Fire and Fury: New Donald Trump book claims Steve Bannon calculated the Muslim ban to enrage people

Source: Independent

The President's advisor Steve Bannon purposefully published the controversial order on a Friday so that it would cause the maximum possible disruption, according to the new Fire and Fury book detailing journalist Michael Wolff's time in the White House.

Signing the order late before the weekend also meant that there would be the maximum number of people available to come and protest. Immediately after the order went into affect, activists flooded airports including New York's JFK, in scenes that would become defining of Trump's early presidency.

That was specifically calculated by Mr Bannon, the book suggests. Amid that fallout, people both within and outside the White House asked why he had decided to have the order signed at a time that increased confusion within airports, the government and the US at large.

"Errr ... that's why," Mr Wolff reports him as saying. "So the snowflakes would show up at the airports and riot." Mr Wolff says it was designed as a way to "crush the liberals" by "mak[ing] them crazy and drag[ging] them to the left".

The article goes on to say that the ban was "written in a rush" by Bannon and other aidies, including Stephen Miller, whom Bannon "encouraged to research the ban on the internet so that Mr Bannon could arrive at the White House with a 'back-of-the-envelope' draft of the travel ban."

And then the order was "slightly diluted" thanks to Reince Priebus, whose recommendations took it down to a "merely Draconian" level.

Was he still laughing when the 'snowflakes' at the airports turned into a blizzard? I don't think he gets to put that one in his win column.

They got the tax breaks they wanted. Bannon's a pain in the ass otherwise, and they probably thnk he's an embarrassment too. For that matter, Cheeto is also an embarrassment that they don't need any more. Rich people are so fickle and self-centered!

in too many Americans where that gut feeling of understanding and treasuring of governmental ethics is supposed to come from. Remove the structure requiring adherence anyway and...nothing.

And for so many months the pundits thought that Trump was thinking and devising strategies, when it was all about Bannon.

Now that Evil is out of the mix, all we have is Stupid. I'd like to say that less harm is being done. Too bad that is not true.

He may not have an official job with 45 any more, but I think they may be coordinating. Maybe coordinating is too strong a word. 45 is not smart enough to coordinate. He is being used by Evil and a few others. They are thinking and devising strategies. Trump is shouting and posturing while Bannon and others do the real work of evil.

Bannon is not actually lying to us. He is saying that he still supports 45.
