Still blows my mind just to think about it.

Those were the days... when America did GREAT things. And as JFK is still widely quoted: "We choose to walk on the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are HARD." Now, nobody seems interested in anything that isn't quick 'n' dirty, sleazy and flimsy.

And every kid knew you had to have amazing grades and be in peak physical condition to do so. Kids aspired to be the best they can be.

Now kids live in a dumbed-down culture of reality TV star and "singing" fashion model worship. Thuggery and willful stupidity are our new cardinal virtues. Fucking pathetic.

He shared it with Gus Grissom before they realized that it was too crumbly, and that they should probably just put it away.

Dude was an astronaut's astronaut. He was a legend.

astounding intellect. He is routinely numbered among the smartest astronauts, who were a pretty smart group to begin with.

Thank you for your contributions to the USA's space accomplishments, sir...

Aldrin, Bean, Scott, Duke and Schmitt. The rest (except Cunningham, who only went to Earth orbit, in Apollo 7) went round the Moon.

Young was born in San Francisco, California, on September 24, 1930, to parents William Hugh Young and Wanda Howland Young.[7] At 18 months old, due to the Great Depression, he moved with his family to Georgia, then to Orlando, Florida, where he attended grade school and later Orlando High School until graduating in 1948.[8][9]

He was my favorite astronaut, an amazing pilot and engineer. As head of the astronaut office in the late 70's he made the final decision on crew assignments so of course when the first Shuttle flight came up he assigned himself as commander. Maybe it's just me and getting older but it seems like we're running out of real life hero's and all that's left are celebrities.
