US senator says no evidence of 'sonic attacks' in Cuba

Source: Associated Press

HAVANA (AP) — Republican Sen. Jeff Flake says the U.S. has found no evidence that American diplomats in Havana were the victims of attacks with an unknown weapon.

Flake, a Senate Foreign Relations Committee member and a longtime leading advocate of detente with Cuba, met Friday with high-ranking Cuban officials including Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and officials from the Interior Ministry, which oversees domestic security and works with foreign law-enforcement agencies.

The Cubans told Flake the FBI has told them that, after four trips to Cuba, its agents have found no evidence that mysterious illnesses suffered by U.S. diplomats were the result of attacks.

Flake told The Associated Press on Saturday morning that classified briefings from U.S. officials have left him with no reason to doubt the Cuban account, although he declined to discuss the contents of those briefings.

According to the article Flake didn't say there's no evidence, he only said they couldn't find any.

to state that was not the claim.

It was assumed that this was the claim. People said that it was the claim. But it wasn't, in fact, the claim.

In fact, the similar kind of things elsewhere--what was in Turkmenistan?--was adduced as evidence that it wasn't the Cubans.

They thought about fake news, they thought about sonic devices, they thought about law and order. They thought about these things you are supposed to think about if you were thinking about fake news, sonic devices and law and order. They were smart, bigley smart as in real smart.

Not being able to "find" evidence of a higher order is, in my book, just an admission of failure, given the very specific and credible other evidence. There is even medical evidence of harm.

Brain abnormalities found in victims of US embassy attack in Cuba https://www.democraticunderground.com/10141931959

Associated Press in Washington

Doctors treating the victims of mysterious, invisible attacks on the US embassy in Cuba have discovered brain abnormalities as they search for clues to explain the damage to their hearing, vision, balance and memory.

The most specific finding to date about physical damage from the attacks shows that whatever it was that harmed the Americans, it led to perceptible changes in their brains. It is one of several factors fuelling growing scepticism that some kind of sonic weapon was involved.

Medical testing has revealed the embassy workers developed changes to the white matter tracts that let different parts of the brain communicate, several US officials said, describing a growing consensus held by university and government physicians researching the attacks. White matter acts like information highways between brain cells.

Loud, mysterious sounds followed by hearing loss and ear-ringing had led investigators to suspect “sonic attacks”. But officials are now avoiding that term. The sounds may have been the byproduct of something else that caused damage, said three US officials briefed on the investigation.

Or at least not in very muscular ways.

Why did they try to steal the election???????

Why have they been provocative in a bunch of areas of our interest around the world????

Why have they been noodling around our key infrastructure like nuclear facilities and the electrical grid ???????

Obama was a little meek and Trump is owned. Who's gonna stop them?

and yes, we do tend to do economic sanctions. The Magnitsky Act has been the most successful, AFAIk. But we really did NOT respond to their meddling in the election when we knew about it in full measure. Maybe it's a good thing because if they ever REALLY want to retaliate to our retaliation, we could be in real trouble. This is cyberwarfare -- something of a virtual attack / counterattack going on.

22. sonic attacks. But officials are now carefully avoiding that term................
Sun Jan 7, 2018, 06:17 AM
Jan 2018

I think something happened to these folks, just do not know what it was.

.......“The Cuban Interior Ministry is saying the FBI has told them there is no evidence of a sonic attack, even though that term is being used, attack, there is no evidence of it,” Flake told the AP. “There’s no evidence that somebody purposefully tried to harm somebody. Nobody is saying that these people didn’t experience some event, but there’s no evidence that that was a deliberate attack by somebody, either the Cubans or anybody else.

“As I said, I won’t talk about what I have seen in a classified setting, but nothing is inconsistent with what the Cubans have said, and I think the FBI would say that.”

Flake, one of President Donald Trump’s toughest Republican critics, announced last year that he would not seek re-election as Senator from Arizona. He has not ruled out running against Trump in 2020.

Several of the 24 U.S. diplomats and spouses reported hearing loud, mysterious sounds followed by hearing loss and ear-ringing, leading some U.S. officials to describe the incidents as “sonic attacks.” But officials are now carefully avoiding that term.

Medical testing has revealed that some embassy workers had apparent abnormalities in their white matter tracts that let different parts of the brain communicate, several U.S. officials said, and acoustic waves have never been shown to alter those tracts.

So, suddenly it never happened.

Unless the incident repeats itself and shows a pattern. Can't say it was an attack when you don't know anything beyond "something weird happened".
