Tom Steyer will plow $30 million into midterms, but wont run for office in 2018
Source: Washington Post
Democratic donor Tom Steyer, who has spent more than $100 million since 2016 on political campaigns, will forgo any run for office this year and focus instead on ending Republican control of the House of Representatives.
People have been asking me for 12 months and five days what Im going to run for, Steyer said in an interview before a news conference in downtown D.C. Im not going to run for anything. Ive said all along, the question I always ask is: Where can I make the most differential impact? And when I look at the jobs I can run for in California, they all have reputable Democrats running for them already.
Steyers decision removes some of the drama from Californias races for governor and U.S. Senate, which had attracted ambitious Democrats who had been wanting to move up for years. The billionaire, who plunged into politics in 2013 when he founded NextGen Climate to advocate for Democrats, had been discussed as a 2016 candidate for Senate and seen by some 2018 gubernatorial candidates as a dark horse who could jump in late.
...snip...
Having ruled that out, and while raising his national presence with a $20 million campaign to impeach President Trump, Steyer now plans to spend at least $30 million to build NextGen Rising, his 2018 campaign to increase millennial voter turnout. The targets are 24 Republican-controlled congressional districts and a handful of swing seats currently held by Democrats, in 10 states.

A much smarter use of his money than an Impeachment drive.

(4,742 posts)I thought that was a waste of money. Yes maybe it got under Trump's skin and rallied the Dem base some but let's take control of the House in 2018. That would be much better $$ and time spent right now.

(43,258 posts)you still need what, 2/3 in the Senate? So it would have to be heavyweight evidence, not just political.

(52,307 posts)i agree, that removal is rather unlikely as it requires 16 republicans to join us even if we have 51 senate seats in 2019.
but impeachment would tarnish his brand and distract from their agenda.
at the end of the day, it's a very political decision, whether or not an impeachment and trial resulting in a non-removal exposes donnie and the republicans for what they are and motivates people to vote for democrats, or if it backfires and makes opposition to donnie seem purely political. or worse, the non-removal makes him look like he's been cleared.

(30,613 posts)It gets our base riled up and out to the polls.
Though, those of us who are numerate know that it's a pretty unlikely outcome.

(41,168 posts)It's long overdue to try to balance Fox and Hate Radio's enormous influence, despite previous efforts of Air America and Current TV.
A major new network would be in addition to the FREE SPEECH TV Network which offers excellent news, programs and documentaries available 24/7- Online, on Dish and Direct TV Channels, on some Radio & Cable Public TV stations, via podcast and other internet outlets.

I am glad he is not running for office in 2018. I am looking forward voting for him to be president in 2020.
