Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted calls for uniform early voting hours

Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Republican directed Ohio's 88 county boards of election to adhere to these hours of operation during the 35-day early voting period: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the first three weeks, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the final two weeks.

But there will be no weekend voting when early voting begins on Oct. 2, Husted said.

"The bottom line is the antagonists have made an issue about the fact that voters aren't being treated fairly, that they aren't being treated the same," Husted said during a hastily called news conference at his office. "Today we're treating voters everywhere the same."

The secretary's order has hardly squelched the controversy as Democrats immediately issued calls of injustice over the lack of weekend voting hours, a crucial voting period for Democrats during the last presidential election in 2008.

The New York Times editorial stung Husted so he responded by eliminating "early voting" on the weekend before the election. Before this decision, Husted had been permitting rural and suburban counties to have longer hours than the voting hours in our urban counties. The 'pukes had been operating on a loophole that the SOS could break the tie when boards of elections split evenly between two Democrats and two Republicans over extended hours.

Suffrage takes another hit. John Brown's body is rolling in his grave.

Does Ohio have any absentee or mail-in balloting? That would take care of this goat rope operation! freshwest Aug 2012 #1
Yes, they do have absentee voting. It needs to be promoted. CaliforniaPeggy Aug 2012 #2
It would be eliminated completely that way. No worry about when the polls close. freshwest Aug 2012 #13

3. No Early Voting on Weekends

Early voting on weekends is very effective for minority and working voters who can not take off during the week. The statistics on early voting for the Sunday before an election are amazing .  http://www.protectingthevote.com/

A Precise Cut: The Partisan Reduction of Sunday Early Voting
In the traditional swing states of Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio, Republican legislation targeted early voting on Sundays. Florida banned early voting on the Sunday immediately before Election Day, and legislation in North Carolina and Ohio prohibited Sunday voting outright.  Yet the composition of voters on Sundays demonstrates the discriminatory effect of banning early voting on Sunday. Religious communities, especially urban churches, routinely encourage their congregations to vote early following their weekly Sunday services. The numbers from Florida in 2008 indisputably demonstrate that cutting early voting burdens likely Democratic voters—a deplorable use of public policy for purely partisan gain.

• African Americans represented 13% of all Florida voters, and 22% of early voters, but 31% of the total voters on the final Sunday of early voting.
• Latino citizens represented 11% of Florida voters, and 11% of early voters, but 22% of the total voters on the final Sunday.
• First-time voters in Florida represented 12% of all voters, but 22% of the final Sunday voters.

Together, these groups comprised approximately 36 percent of all voters, but 75 percent of final Sunday voters. The groups that disproportionately used Sunday early voting—African Americans, Latinos, and first-time voters—heavily supported President Obama in 2008. Although early voting ensures more Americans can participate in our democracy, Republicans have attacked it, apparently elevating the potential for partisan victories over the public good.

embrace anything republican. As the republican party sees their power diminish nationwide, voter suppression is their only lifeline.

Pathetic. And quite frankly, embarrassing. It appears the United Nations needs to send in vote monitors to keep an eye on republican operatives - just like they do in banana republics.

Yeah, "antagonists." I noticed the same thing. People who want to be treated with equality and justice are now "antagonists."

His recent interview this morning on MSNBC, Husted tried to portray that he was settling the issue to be fair to all voters. He failed to mention that he originally intervened and supported the decision to take away extended hours that Republican counties had that Democratic counties didn't. Hopefully, those who don't live in Ohio, realize that Husted only relented because of so much outcry of unfairness he demonstrated by breaking the tie in Democratic counties by siding with the Republicans in the first place. With the continued media attention still, he now says he "might" consider re-instating early voting during the last 3 days before the election in all counties. You can't fake smelling like a rose if you are really a dandelion
