Poll: Nearly half of voters say Trump exoneration is likely in 2018

Nearly half of voters think its at least somewhat likely President Donald Trump will be exonerated of wrongdoing by the special counsel this year, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.
A 48 percent plurality of voters say its either very or somewhat likely Trump will be cleared in 2018, the poll shows, compared with 37 percent who say its not too likely or not at all likely Trump is cleared. And fewer than a third think Trump is likely to leave office in the coming year, despite calls from some Democrats for his impeachment. But the first survey of 2018 isnt all good news for the administration: Pluralities of voters expect Democrats, who have a significant lead on the congressional generic ballot, to win control of both the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
Voters predictions for Trump in 2018 are divided sharply along partisan lines, the polls show.
Democrats and Republicans have drastically different views on whether Trump will be cleared of wrongdoing in the Russia probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller, said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consults co-founder and chief research officer. Three in four Republicans, 74 percent, say its likely Trump will be cleared of wrongdoing in the Russia probe this year. But only 32 percent of Democrats say the same.

(46,169 posts)circumstantial evidence, like Chris Christie with Bridgegate. Not equivalent with exoneration or innocence.

(4,429 posts)I think he won't be impeached, but that's because the republicans will protect him.
Clearly he is guilty.
Most likely democrats know what reality is. and reality is Trump, although is guilty, will most likely slide. UNLESS.... the feds turn this over to NY.

(52,309 posts)i think it's quite possibly that mueller nails many people very close to donnie and also that the facts that come out make it clear as a practical matter that donnie is in it up to his eyeballs.
however, there are a number of reasons why mueller might not actually charge donnie with anything, or with anything "major".
this could be because the strategy is to nail him at the state level where he has less ability to interfere, or maybe out of fear that witnesses will cover for him, or simply because taking on donnie himself has big risks associated with it and inevitably looks "political".
frankly i think donnie *will* get identified as having likely committed certain crimes, and might very will be indicted, but it's possibly he will escape, or that what he's indicted of will be "disappointing".
in any event, republicans will try to spin the results as donnie being exonerated even if his entire family is sent up the river. as long as donnie himself is not indicted, or if he's only indicted on charges they can spin as being "minor" (such as violating election "paperwork" laws).
anyway, my point is the ultimate mueller report will be very damning and will not exonerate donnie in any way, but republicans will surely spin it as such almost no matter what.

(10,037 posts)The only way I see a complete exoneration of collusion/conspiracy with a foreign government to influence our election is a mental deficiency defense. Money laundering and breaking of the emoluments clause will continue and perhaps even become more brazen. But he can do it, because the GOP will let him, and his base will continue to scream lock her up every time Hillary is mentioned.

(1,702 posts)While the RePUBES control both houses. They will split hairs and like many lawyers (which a lo of them are) take various points of view and legal interpretations. My hope is the houses flip AND without question NY indicts him and family for the obvious money laundering. Just sayin if so many average folks see his corrupt money laundering ways (Already fined 10 Million to settle $ laundering at one of his bankrupt casinos) just think what Mueller and team know.
