Immigration agents target 7-Eleven stores in nationwide sweep

Source: Washington Post

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents showed up at dozens of 7-Eleven stores before dawn Wednesday to interview employees and deliver audit notifications, carrying out what the agency said was the largest operation targeting an employer since President Trump took office.

ICE said its agents targeted 98 stores and made 21 arrests, describing the operation as a warning to other companies who may have unauthorized workers on their payroll.

“Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,” said Thomas D. Homan, the agency’s top official, in a statement. “Businesses that hire illegal workers are a pull factor for illegal immigration and we are working hard to remove this magnet,” Homan’s statement said. “ICE will continue its efforts to protect jobs for American workers by eliminating unfair competitive advantages for companies that exploit illegal immigration.”

The agency said it sent agents Wednesday to deliver audit notifications and conduct interviews at 6 a.m., temporarily shutting down franchises in Washington, D.C., and 17 states: California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.

Wow. I know we have a bunch of these stores here in the Philly area (along with Wawa convenience stores). The ones near me have a number of Filipinos working there.

And pay them the current minimum wage, that's if they can find any Americans who will take the jobs!

If you know of a 7-11 that isn't paying its illegals the minimum wage, you can report that to the Department of Labor...

chopping the workforce from the bottom could really slow things down, create out of stock situations,
raise prices. Plus, withdraw those wages from the economy - rents, food, gas, Walmart, dollar stores ....

This is a manufactured crisis for perceived political gain ... and once the public awakens, it won't deliver
beneficial or satisfactory outcomes for ANYONE except that RockHead in the Oval Office.

This "sweep" was a follow up after a raid in 2013.

From the article linked in the OP:

"Federal agents in 2013 arrested nine 7-Eleven franchise owners and managers for “conspiring to commit wire fraud, stealing identities and concealing and harboring illegal aliens employed at their stores,” according to the agency.

ICE said all but one pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay more than $2.6 million in back wages stolen from workers."

The owners of meat processing plants have a habit of calling immigration enforcement whenever their current work forces gets too uppity. They themselves are insulated from any legal repercussions because they use sketchy labor contractors who tend to vanish whenever there's trouble, leaving the owners to say, Nope, no sir officer, we didn't know our contractors were hiring undocumented workers! We're victims too!

The workers in these plants are treated like commodities. When they wear out, permanently damaged by repetitive motion injury, they are simply replaced.

Now there are 21 job openings at 7-11 stores for all those high school kids or college students or even stay at home mothers/fathers who want to pick up a little extra cash. They'll be lining up tomorrow for interviews I'm sure.

He's around 21. Works 7 days per week, 12 hours per day (7am-7pm).
A lot of character, laughs all the time, very friendly.
During the election, he wanted Trump to win. I told him that was a bad idea, and tried to explain why.
A few months after the election, I came in and he was pale faced. I asked what was wrong, and he said he was afraid Trump was going to have him deported. A delivery person there offered for him to stay at his place if he was scared.

That was months ago. The fear wore off for him. I now wonder if he was nabbed in the "raids."
Again, he works at 7am, so maybe they missed him by hitting early in the morning. I hope so, and I hope he was able to hide at that person's home.
