Vikings Shock Saints on Last-Second Touchdown by Stefon Diggs
Source: NY TIMES
MINNEAPOLIS About an hour and a half before his playoff debut, Minnesota quarterback Case Keenum came bounding out of the tunnel at U.S. Bank Stadium, a bundle of kinetic energy, pumping fists and slapping hands and bumping chests. He anticipated feeling nervous always is, he said last week but a good nervous, an excited nervous, a carpe-diem kind of nervous.
He had been waiting his entire peripatetic career for a moment like the one that came Sunday, when Keenum had 25 seconds left to rescue his defense, to demonstrate that his remarkable season was more revelation than fluke, to lift the trailing Vikings and a fan base grated by playoff despair to victory against the New Orleans Saints.
On the final play, Keenum flung the ball downfield, in the general direction of Stefon Diggs, who jumped, caught it, and sped untouched down the sideline. The Fox television brodcast panned to Keenum, who kept saying, Oh, my god, after Minnesota escaped with a 29-24 victory, preserving its bid to become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.
Plenty of fans departed, numbed by the cumulative anguish produced by years of field goals that had gone against the Vikings, after Wil Lutz drilled a go-ahead 43-yarder that sent Saints personnel in the press box exclaiming that they were headed to the N.F.C. championship game next Sunday in Philadelphia.

This game was an instant classic.

Great pass, catch, and run. The whole drive was with only 25 seconds remaining in the game.

(3,304 posts)It's all on the coach as far as I'm concerned how could you not have 2 ir 3 guys in the end zone?

(2,404 posts)I honestly don't believe that he "missed" the tackle. Just think about it for a second and look at the replay again. He actually did the only thing he could do. Here's the way I saw it...
Number 23 came over to cover Diggs. He arrived too early (or the ball was thrown with a little more air under it making it arrive later than he, #23, expected) realizing this and knowing it would result in pass interference, he dove under Diggs to avoid contact. A pass interference call would have resulted in an easy field goal and a Vikings win. All number 23 could hope for was that Diggs would drop the ball... Which he didn't. The unfortunate part was that he took out his teammate who might have stopped Diggs from going into the end zone. As far as I'm concerned, #23 did the right thing... He did all he could do. It was a heads up play.
In fact, when they went back to the studio, one of the former coaches (Dallas) stated almost the very same thing saying that this poor guy is going to catch a lot of crap when he did the right thing.
Great game.

(61,695 posts)But it looked like he was trying to create an unstable landing for Diggs, to flip him on his back. But his body slid too far to down him, and he inadvertently took out #20. That was my interpretation of what I saw.
I don't "blame" players unless they've done something completely dumb, and this was just a tough situation. I doubt I'll look at it again on sports news. It doesn't make much difference to me either way.

(12,867 posts)But at this level of play with a huge game on the line, he's got to do a better job of timing his approach to the arrival of the ball. It was in the air long enough for an adjustment.
It was also the perfect play for the situation -- launch a high pass near the sideline to a receiver who is likely to make the catch in a jump ball play. Unless the defender was in position to leap with him and break up the pass without drawing a flag, the only way to save the game would have been to grab him after the catch and make the tackle in bounds -- or push him out of bounds before his feet came down. That may have been #23's best shot, but he got there too soon and couldn't slow down in time to make that play.

(1,803 posts)the Vikings will lose in the NFC Championship or in the SuperBowl. Id prefer to see them in the Super Bowl losing to the Pats, but the Eagles look to be the real thing. That was a great ending to the game tonight, even for non-fans. Both games today were good.

(17,863 posts)was a Saints fan because I went to high school in Mississippi. I went crazy, but it was a lucky win. I hope the Saints DB Williams can get over it. He is a good young player.
The Vikings better do something about their offensive line, or the Eagles will win the battle of the former Rams back up quarterbacks.

I made it a point to watch EVERY game, contrary to what some dickhead in the White House is pumping out.

Anything can happen...and has!
Next week, Foles, Keenum, Bortles...and some guy named Brady!
It's going to be great!

Saints safety Marcus Williams dove at his legs rather than trying for a tackle. After Diggs regained his balance, he had a clear path to the end zone

Sorry for your loss. I know how you feel. I was a rabid Oakland Raider fan the night Franco Harris made the miraculous "immaculate reception" to cheat us out of a victory. If there would have been instant reply back then the play would have been overturned and we would have won. But then again, had that happened one of the most memorable plays in NFL history wouldn't even be in NFL history. I'm still pissed about it to this very day.

(1,803 posts)That play will leave an indelible impression on the New Orleans fan base. He may want a clean start elsewhere even if the Saints decide to keep him on the roster, which is going to be a question. If he was on the Patriots, Belichik would have had him packing bags already. Maybe thats why the Pats are so disciplined and are in the Championship game, and very possibly going to another Super Bowl.
BTW, Im sure we can disagree about something so mindless as football without you acting like a jerk.

(3,626 posts)...I am glad I watched this game. This was an historic game. People will probably talk about this game for as long as the NFL exists, and maybe long after. The saints came from behind 0-17 to a narrow lead in the fourth quarter, which would have itself been an historic turnaround for a playoff game. Then that touchdown -- well, well done Minnesota Vikings. And I have a soft spot for the second-string quarterback who has always been labeled #2. OK, you guys go and win the Super Bowl now. Drew Brees doesn't realize yet what it means to be 39 years old. Been there, done that, and we got our Lombardi in 2009. At this point I probably won't see it again.
