Trump Looks To Slash Millions In Aid For Palestinian Refugees Despite Warnings

Source: Newsweek

President Donald Trump has threatened to cut tens of millions of dollars in funding to the United Nations Agency for Palestinian refugees unless the Palestinians agree to peace talks with Israel, reports claim.

Trump has yet to announce his final decision, but is expected to cut the first installment to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) by nearly half, with only $60 million of the planned $125 million expected to reach the agency, U.S. officials told the Associated Press.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said future contributions would depend on the agency's ability to demonstrate "significant changes in operations," including requiring Palestinians to re-engage in peace talks with Israel.

The State Department said on Sunday that the decision on funding is still "under review." However, the administration is expected to announce a decision as early as Tuesday, officials told AP.

It's ridiculous that 50 years after they were uprooted they';re still sitting in refugee camps.

In 1945, 25 million Germans were uprooted, thrown out of their homes from great historic cities such as Konigsberg, Breslau, Kolberg, Stargard and hundreds of other towns and cities. They were told toi leave their homes, and start walking west, and the largest number of recorded rapes in world history was used to hustle them along.

Those people are not still sitting in camps on the Oder River demanding their homes back. They went somewhere else. Neighboring countries took them in and some even came to America.

It's time for the camps to close. It's way past time for the neighboring countries to take them in and give them citizenship.

Not every problem in the world is America's problem. There are many other countries who can pay endlessly if they want to.

Peace talks, what a hoot, when israel comes to the table with the heavy hand of amerikkka on the scale, in their favor. This will not end well, more will turn to hamas, as they should

Be aware that while breaking news events involving the Israel-Palestine conflict are sometimes posted here and in General Discussion, we have an entire subforum for in-depth discussion of the conflict.

It's preferred that people remain focused on the breaking news item being discussed in the thread rather than going into the debate about which side is right/wrong/better/worse. This is to keep civil discussion about the breaking event occurring in those threads, as people get very passionate when they start debating sides.

Actually, the comment by flamingprogressive is very germane to this Breaking News item. Why is it perfectly "acceptable" to coerce the Palestinians with punitive financial measures to pressure their participation in such a process, but not impose any such conditions on the Israelis? This conflict will continue feaster and remain toxic until the United States government (especially the current administration) begins to treat all parties with the respect and dignity which they deserve. Exhibiting an extreme bias for only the Israeli position has been, and will remain, counterproductive.

I thought the post didn't exactly support kooky/extremist content.

But I did feel it was completely fair to tell a new person who might not be aware that we have the IP forum that it existed and why.
