WASHINGTON (AP) A Republican senator is denouncing President Donald Trump's use of the terms "fake news" and "enemy of the people" to describe the news media and stories he doesn't like.
Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona said Trump's attacks were reminiscent of words infamously used by Russian dictator Josef Stalin to describe his enemies.
In a speech Wednesday on the Senate floor, Flake called Trump's repeated attacks on the media "shameful" and "repulsive" and said Trump "has it precisely backward." Flake said despotism is the enemy of the people, while a free press is the despot's enemy and a guardian of democracy.
Flake, a frequent Trump critic who is retiring this year, said when Trump calls stories he doesn't like "fake news," he "should be the figure of suspicion, not the press."

(8,965 posts)Flake would be content with a McCain or Romney type, none of whom are unhinged demagogues but would nevertheless push for a conservative agenda. Sometimes, rarely, bad politics and decent character intersect. If at some point Trump is to be shown the door, Democrats will not be able to provide the requisite super-majorities to make it happen. Ultimately, enough Republicans with a spine will need to listen to their constituents and say ENOUGH is ENOUGH, and when those people finally come to their senses, progressives will need to stand tall with them. Debates over policy differences will continue, and those will serve as a basis for cleaning house in '18 and '20, with or without Trump.

(8,965 posts)Flake's over-riding conservative philosophy and matching voting record leaves much to be desired, but I can still differentiate his words of warning on Trump from his lying Senate colleagues Cotton and Perdue, and commend him for being forthright. I believe there are many more like him in Congress who have a similar take on Trump, but they are too afraid of the "base" to come forward.

(115,806 posts)they'd tell Trump something like: "Until you stop behaving like a despot we're voting with the Democrats; we won't support any measures you propose, even those we like, until you shape up." I agree 100% with what Flake said in his speech but it's just words and won't change anything until GOPers who deplore Trump's incursions on democracy and the rule of law keep pandering to him with their votes. Flake should ask himself whether that tax cut was a fair trade for all the damage Trump is doing, which Flake acknowledges.

(204 posts)The interviewer made the point that he could get rid of the Trumpster any time he wanted, simply by caucasing with the Dems, along with another Repug. (Graham? McCain?)
Flake couldn't be bothered to.
