Gunmen in Kabul opened fire Saturday at a major international hotel complex in the Afghan capital, touching off gun battles with security forces, officials said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the clashes at the Inter-Continental Hotel, one of the citys main sites for foreign visitors, envoys and other high-profile guests.
The spokesman for Afghanistans interior ministry, Najib Danish, said special forces were engaged in the battle against the attackers, the BBC reported.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Taliban and Islamic States have each waged attacks in the past against diplomatic targets and other sites in Kabul.

Armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, they used a kitchen door to evade heavy security at the front, local news reports said.
We are hiding in our rooms. I beg the security forces to rescue us as soon as possible before they reach and kill us, one guest told the AFP news agency at the start of the attack. I can hear gunfire from somewhere near the first floor.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four U.S. citizens were killed and two injured in Saturdays attack by the Taliban on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.
We can confirm that there were four U.S. citizens killed and two injured. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and wish for the speedy recovery of those wounded, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
Glenn Selig, a spokesman for Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates, was among the Americans who were killed, CNN reported, citing a statement by Seligs company, Selig Multimedia. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Selig represented Gates, who has been charged in Special Counsel Robert Muellers investigation of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion with President Donald Trumps campaign.
Glenn was in Kabul on a potential success story involving Afghanistan and its steps to battle extremism. The focus was highlighting the countrys new president and constructing a democracy forum event for Afghani women, Selig Multimedia said in a statement, according to CNN.
