Dem slams Trump: I won't be lectured on military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger
Source: The Hill
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) tore into President Trump on the Senate floor Saturday, calling him a five-deferment draft dodger and slamming him for his comments toward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Does he even know that there are service members who are in harms way right now, watching him, looking for their commander-in-chief to show leadership, rather than [trying] to deflect blame? Duckworth said. Or that his own Pentagon says that the short-term funding plans he seems intent on pushing is actually harmful to not just the military, but to our national security?
I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible, she continued. Sadly, this is something that the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do - and I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft-dodger.
And I have a message for cadet bone spurs: If you cared about our military, you'd stop baiting Kim Jong-Un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops, and millions of innocent civilians, in danger."

(24,610 posts)Yeah, he was a captured soldier....look what he did in Federal Government. Google McCain and the Keating 5. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwimmLu67-fYAhVQAqwKHSZIDtwQFggzMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.phoenixnewtimes.com%2Fnews%2Fmccain-the-most-reprehensible-of-the-keating-five-6431838&usg=AOvVaw1GpDPxXMZ6ic7YHRctIO2g
If anything, he redefined "pay and play" at the Federal Level.

(24,610 posts)Sadly, I doubt he will be a player in this, so who's left...Lindsay Graham? Joe Lieberman? There seems to be few Republicans in the Senate who will cross this Clown in Office. It's like they are "all in" on supporting the treason that is occurring in real time.
I remember back in the 70's when we had Republicans who would buck the Party Line. I see no such coalition of progressive/moderate voices who will hold this President in Contempt. Why? Cuz' they don't elect those types anymore.

(9,736 posts)who lost both legs AND an arm in the service of his country. He lost his re-election to a vile draft-dodger named Saxby Chambliss, who campaigned on the theme that Senator Cleland was not sufficiently pro-military.

(16,791 posts)Not pro-Military enough is such a Republican crock of shit.
Max Cleland lost his limbs in Vietnam. Donald Trump avoided service. He goes after Tammy Duckworth, he will be hearing from Max and wounded Veterans like it is nobody's business. And it won't be pretty.

(613 posts)I think Duckworth's use of the term "draft dodger" to describe Trump is unfortunate.
Trump was not a draft dodger. He did not risk his family and future to stand up for what he believed, the way draft dodgers who fled the US did. Those people risked their family relationships and left a country they loved because they did not want to be involved in an illegal and irresponsible war. They risked the possibility of never being able to go home again.
Trump was a draft evader who used his family's wealth to buy his way out of war he actually supported and his family helped finance. He risked nothing.

(629 posts)I admit, I was one of those people who thought most of the talk between Trump and Kim Jong Un was bluster until yesterday. I was sure Trump was doing this all for his base to have some red meat to chew on while they adore him. Now, my son in law has returned from his tour of Korea. I won't say more for fear somehow what I say could come back on him. I just hope I am being paranoid and nothing could ever come his way.
So my SIL was to be based at a relatively safe permanent duty station. He was even attending a school about the place he was going to. When the school ended he came home and received orders here to standby for further orders back to Korea. He says that it better be war because he doesn't want to go back (yes he is a gung-ho guy). My daughter is about to have a breakdown. If he goes back to Korea there is a MUCH higher chance of war. I'm pretty concerned about all this. I just thought Trump as stupid and a braggart. Getting thousands or millions of people killed because he is stupid and a braggart puts him in the Hitler leader of nations category. I just couldn't imagine Trump emerging from some bunker as a leader in a post apocalyptic world.
