Here are the latest developments, updated throughout the day:
Options for Compromise Offered by Centrist Group (3:15 p.m.)
A group of Senate moderates working on a compromise plan to break the stalemate over funding and immigration that forced a partial shutdown of the government were set to deliver a set of options Sunday to party leaders.
About 20 centrist senator from both parties worked out a set of options to extend stopgap funding for the government through Feb. 8. Part of the plan would include a commitment for a separate vote on legislation to put into law a program that protects from deportation some of the undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. That is a central demand of Democrats.
As the meeting finished, Democratic Senators Chris Coons and Joe Manchin said they were going to take the proposal to Chuck Schumer, the partys leader in the Senate, while Republican members of the of the group were headed to meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. We recognize that ultimately the decision will be up to McConnell and Schumer, Republican Senator Susan Collins said.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said that if McConnell makes a commitment to bring up immigration legislation there probably will be enough votes to extend government funding through Feb. 8

(24,319 posts)What exactly is a "commitment"? Today's commitment will be tomorrow's broken promise. And even if the republican leadership honors it, there's no guarantee Trump will not veto it.

Even if they pass it, will Trump change his mind again, and again, and again?
Once done deals are reversed, there's no way of knowing what the outcome will be.

(26,045 posts)...if they dont pass it attached to a budget item, Trump will veto it and Republicans will uphold his veto. They get all they want, we get none of what we want. Sometimes "compromise" is just another word for "capitulation."

(4,423 posts)GOP will demand full funding for 20Billion border wall and end to chain migration + ending immigration from so called shithole countries through some merit based undefined crap and for all that they will allow immigrants to stay here without threat of deportation but not become citizens for decades or some such crap, we will never have the bargaining power that we have right now.
