A Republican senator said Monday that Congress should not wait for President Trump as lawmakers negotiate over a deal to end the government shutdown, arguing it is the legislative branchs job to fund the government.
"I do not know where the president is, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) told CNNs New Day when asked if he knew where the president is on the issues currently under discussion. I don't think we should wait for the President. Presumably he's thinking it through. Hes watching to see what were doing.
Kennedys remarks come as lawmakers struggle to reach a deal to re-open the government, for which a partial shutdown began at midnight on Saturday after the Senate failed to pass a short-term funding bill.
The Louisiana lawmaker argued it is up to him and his colleagues to reach a deal to end the shutdown. The executive branch, as you well know, is separate from the legislative branch. And its our job to fund government and keep government open, Kennedy said.

(43,182 posts)He's more deluded than Trump!
The Senate should cut deals and ram something through.
Can they override his veto on a budget?

(6,044 posts)Kennedy is actually distancing himself from Trump (don't know where he is on issues), and asserting the separation of the tree branches of government, clarifying that the Congress has the duty to fund the government.

(47,501 posts)this is being discussed behind closed doors between republicans and Democrats. Wouldn't it be wild if republicans and Democrats united against the president? I really can't see any other way out of this mess, unless Trump has a brief moment of clarity.

(47,131 posts)Congress. The longer the shut down continues, the worse the optics for both parties.
We can probably discount the public posturing as nonsense right now.
I'm sure members of both parties would rather the blame fall on the ass in the White House, than on them. Right now he has pissed off pretty much everyone, so there is little reason for loyalty and besides that, he is probably much more temporary than they are.

(30,745 posts)on trump's part. Create chaos. Then go off and sulk somewhere while everyone waits for your reaction or decision.
Screw this. Tell 45 to do his job or else. This is not kindergarten.
