Zinke advances road through Alaska wildlife refuge

Source: The Hill

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke approved a land-transfer deal Monday to allow Alaska to build a road through a federal wildlife refuge in the southwestern part of the state.

The action closes a major chapter on a fight that has stretched more than three decades and became a top priority for Alaska, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R), who is chairwoman of the committees overseeing both Interior Department policies and its budget.

The gravel, one-lane road would cut through the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, connecting the remote community of King Cove to Cold Bay. Locals and Alaska leaders say it’s necessary to link King Cove to a large, all-weather airport, mostly for medical evacuations in poor weather.

But conservationists have long fought the road. They say that the road would not be restricted to medical emergency use and would be destructive to the refuge.

need a road to get in and out of that area - makes sense. Gravel road today which needs paved tomorrow which will lead to a dual-lane road in the near future. The old adage of the camel getting it's nose in the tent.

You support the King Cove Road. The road was promised when They selected the location of the all weather airport. It is a vital link, that will save lives and provide for safety to the natives that live there. If something life threatening happens to anyone in the village in the middle of winter (Which lasts up to 7 months) That road will be the only way to get to the airport.

Who's going to do the upkeep on a remote road in winter? Sounds like a lot of plowing. Don't get me wrong, I totally support the Natives, but this doesn't sound much better than going x-country in 4-wheel drive. Or a snowmobile.

with money from the state...believe it or not this road is not only viable it is needed to save lives for the people of King Cove. Sometimes the ignorance regarding Alaska is astounding. People have already died because they could not be transported to the airport. This is not a mystery nor is it a minor issue to Alaska Natives. Our lives are not acceptable losses for politics.

The isolated Aleutian village of King Cove fights to complete a road connecting them with Cold Bay and the only all-weather airport in the area. Throughout the last 30 years, King Cove officials say 19 lives have been lost because of failed medevacs.
