Blizzard pushes across Nebraska, creating whiteout conditions and causing multiple crashes

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Michael O'Connor and Jay Withrow

A blizzard charging across Nebraska today has created whiteout conditions in parts of the state, making some roads impassable, causing multiple crashes and even forcing snow plows off highways in some areas because of poor visibility.

Crashes have forced the closure of portions of Interstate 80, but no fatalities or serious injured have been reported, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Gov. Pete Ricketts and other state officials briefed the news media on the storm during a conference call Monday morning.

Ricketts urged Nebraskans to avoid travel in areas affected by the storm.

I understand this is sort of standard nomenclature. But it seems especially odd in one single sentence. If snow plows were "forced off highways" by the storm, then what were these "crashes" doing out in it? Didn't poor decision making "cause" the crashes? The storm just presented the opportunity, one the snow plows chose to avoid.

salin, Ernst is the idiot from Iowa. Our two idiots from Nebraska are Ben Sasse and Deb Fischer. Don't think I spelled Deb's name right but she is so sickening I don't care.

... it didn't say "Buzzard pushes across Nebraska"

I was really working my way up to a panic attack there for a moment

'Blizzard' as in the makers of Warcraft. I am such a nerd sometimes. I should get out more perhaps.

Oh yes, watch out for the Door Buzzards.. They can be particularly dangerous this time of year.

sure miss the good old days when there was nonstop winter from the first of November through mid-April. This wet cold of 30-40 degrees gets in your bones and is so much WORSE than the dry cold of 0-20 degrees. Usually with the latter you get blue skies + sun with brilliant white snow on the ground - not this dreary gray sky-brown landscape that we get now.

Quite a surprise. I was coming from Dallas to New Orleans this a.m. and we were late taking off because the pilot told us the American plane had just come from Omaha and had been "stuck in ice"!
