NASA pulled this astronaut from a space station crew. Her brother blames racism.

NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps, who was slated to become the first black crew member to live on board the International Space Station, was unexpectedly pulled from her June flight.
In a brief news release Thursday, NASA announced that Serena Auñón-Chancellor, a fellow member of Epps's astronaut class who was scheduled to launch later in the year, would be bumped up to take Epps's place. Epps, who had already started training for her role on Expedition 56-57, will return to Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she will be a candidate for future crews.
NASA did not give an explanation for the crew change. But Epps's brother blamed racism at the space agency.
My sister Dr. Jeannette Epps has been fighting against oppressive racism and misogynist in NASA and now they are holding her back and allowing a Caucasian Astronaut to take her place! Henry Epps wrote in a Facebook post Saturday. (The post has since been removed.) He linked to a MoveOn.org petition asking NASA to reinstate Epps.

(3,433 posts)There are many reasons (legitimate) reasons why someone could be bumped. Something as small as a cold could prevent being sent. I will wait for additional information before offering my opinion on this.

(55,445 posts)NASA is an organization of science, but even before that they're an organization of public relations... Calling NASA racist on social media is going to get his sister permanently grounded double-quick if there isn't some kind of proof backing him up...

(5,586 posts)So i'm not sure this can be blamed on racism. Wonder if we'll ever know why it really happened.

(55,445 posts)when Epps was replaced with another woman seems off-kilter...
I'll reserve judgement until I hear from Epps herself

(12,660 posts)Most racists would consider her acceptable despite the name - she looks "European Hispanic", not Central/South American, no matter what her actual ethnicity is.
If it is racism, just know they really are that shallow.
However, I suspect there was a change in the mission, because unless there was a medical reason to postpone Ms. Epps, it would typically be due to the changing needs of the experiments and studies they were going to be doing during this period.

Here's our friend, Leland Melvin who never spoke, at least not to us, of discrimination at NASA.

(26,582 posts)Dr. Epps is an engineer. The person replacing her is a medical doctor. Theyre doing more human factors experiments than engineering type experiments.

(34,195 posts)And seven more male and female African-American astronauts who did not go into space.
That's 21 male and female African-American astronauts.
So looks like astronaut Jeanette Epps was not pulled for sexist or racist reasons.
