Neil Diamond says he has Parkinsons disease, will retire from touring
Source: Washington Post
Neil Diamond, one of Americas most enduring songwriters best known for his singalong hits Sweet Caroline and Cracklin Rosie, announced Monday that he has Parkinsons disease.
Diamond, who will turn 77 on Wednesday, said he is retiring from concert touring as a result of the diagnosis.
It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years, Diamond said in a statement on his website. My sincerest apologies to everyone who purchased tickets and were planning to come to the upcoming shows.
Diamond said he will continue writing and recording music.

(10,109 posts)I always wanted to see him perform, even though some major cheese involved, he has some great songs and I always admire a performer that writes and performs their own songs. I wish him the best.
Peace

(5,914 posts)Up until about 1976, he was a musical monster. So many great tunes.
Sucks to hear this.

(65,222 posts)Boy, was that an excellent album. The band is super tight, and it's hit after hit.
The live version of "Soulaiman" is oustanding.
I agree with you that it sucks to hear this.

(5,914 posts)Tap Root Manuscript was my favorite of all. Brilliant, and very cutting edge at the time.
I remember in the early 80s when Paul Simon made Graceland, and the music press went nuts fawning all over him about how we went to Africa and made all these songs based on the African music he encountered there, and how avant-garde that all was.
And I was, like, come on. Neil Diamond did that exact thing 10 years ago and hit that baby out of the park.

(65,222 posts)And TRM was a better overall album. And like you said, 10 years prior.

(5,914 posts)Even now, just thinking about it. After all these years. There is a spiritual sincerity and innocence that just rises out of it. Neil was a Top 40 singer/songwriter who went off to Africa to find some interesting beats for his music, but the music he found there changed him instead. The resulting album he made when he came back is just incredible.
For all of you people sitting on the sidelines, who think that Neil Diamond is just some old "oldies" player that no one cares about anymore, go back and listen to his early work. Tell me you don't think it moves you in any way.

(17,337 posts)In the past year I made a point to see all the Divas of my era. Barbra Streisand, Cher and Diana Ross. Bette Miller is still on my list. And I recently thought I would go see Neil Diamond next time he makes it to Vegas or anywhere in AZ. Bummer. He is so good.
Sweet Caroline....good times never felt so good...
Sending him healing and supportive energy💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

(22,172 posts)"Play Me". Not such a fan of his later stuff though. Saw him in concert with my sister many years ago.
77 years old...........damn I'm old.

Well, half of it anyway.
I think his song, "Coming to America" is very topical these days. Best to you, Mr. Diamond.

(10,117 posts)... of his. Neil Diamond is a poet. The lyrics in his songs are as strong as his music. He is a great talent.
I saw him in concert 3 times. The earliest one was the best...just him sitting on a tall stool with his guitar. 😀

(26,060 posts)I grew up on Neil Diamond, both my parents loved his music. And how can you not just sing along to his great tunes. Someone close to me was diagnosed around 4 years ago and watching the progression is heartbreaking.

(15,555 posts)He was an absolutely terrific performer. I loved him from the start. His duet with Barbra Streisand "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" is heartwrenching but beautiful.
I still listen to his music. What a talented man he is.

(188 posts)Three things are simultaneously true:
1) I'm so sorry Neil Diamond has Parkinson's disease. My dad had that and it was very, very difficult for him. I wish Neil nothing but the best.
2) I never really cared for Neil Diamond and if he were still healthy and touring and came to my city I wouldn't buy tickets.
3) I feel sad for people who love Neil Diamond's music. I know what it's like to lose the chance to see a musician you love when they're no longer touring. For example, Eric Clapton may never tour again. In addition to nerve problems in his hand and arm, he's also going deaf. This breaks my heart, as I always wanted to see him one more time. So I know what Neil Diamond fans are feeling and my heart goes out to you.

(63,912 posts)understand all drummers get eventually. He opted for therapy rather than surgery. When I told a good friend of ours about his situation, he said he'd help out and handed me an envelope containing $1,000. He doesn't know my son in law. He just saw a fellow musician that needed help and of course is a friend of mine. What a great thing to do for a complete stranger to do..
