Oscars 2018: Shape of Water Leads With 13 Nominations

Source: Variety

“The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro’s romantic ode to the horror films of his youth, dominated the 90th Academy Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up a leading 13 nominations.

It was followed by “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” with 9 nominations, and “Dunkirk” with 7 nominations. All three films earned best picture nods. The rest of the category was rounded out by “Call Me By Your Name,” “Darkest Hour,” “Get Out,” “Phantom Thread,” and “The Post.”

“This has been a remarkable year for the movies,” Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences President John Bailey said before nominations were announced.

Indeed it was, but as much for what happened behind-the-scenes as for the on-screen work. That’s because this year’s Oscars are unfolding at a time of tumult for the movie business. In October, dozens of women stepped forward to accuse indie producer Harvey Weinstein of harassment and assault. The filmmaker was a mainstay of awards season, credited with creating the modern Oscar campaign (a seemingly endless parade of celebrity grip-and-grins paired with a whisper network aimed at crippling the perceived frontrunners). Since the allegations broke, Weinstein has been fired from his company and drummed out of the industry. But the issue has only widened. Scores of big names — a group ranging from Oscar winners Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman to A-list director and film financier Brett Ratner — have all been accused of sexual misconduct.

Full list of nominees does include Ladybird as Best Picture nominee.

While Gary Oldman did a great job acting as Churchill, both Darkest Hour and Dunkirk are overrated, IMHO.

Kudos to Shape Of Water, a groundbreaking, genre-defying film with incredible writing and performances.

I know he wouldn't have won the award, given his trophy-crowded track record, but he should have gotten a nomination for his portrayal of Ben Bradlee. I think it's his best performance ever---better than "Private Ryan," and for-sure better than "Forrest Gump." Just my opinion, of course.

Tom Hanks getting a nomination means another actor would get passed over. An Oscar can really boost an actor's career. There are only 5 nominees in the acting categories. Tom has already received 2 Best Actor Oscars. Frankly, I feel the same way about Meryl Streep or any other actor or show that has received multiple awards. She's a great actress, but I would prefer she share the wealth of awards with other actors.

But, in fact, Meryl did say she felt "overrated" and laughed.

Gary Oldman is just fabulous in "Darkest Hour." I'd like to see him win. I thought the whole picture was fabulous.

They are good, as always, and the movie is good, but it isn't anything new or special, like, say, Kaluuya or Ronan, or Get Out of Lady Bird.

Oldman can go to hell. He is a Grade A bigot.

Very good, very underrated actresses.

Or, with Best Actor, Daniel Kaluuya (although DDL was sooooo good in Phantom Thread).
