Blind Metro attorney hit by bicycle in N.Y.

A prominent attorney for disabled rights and the face of Michigan's pedestrian safety campaign is recovering in a New York hospital after he was struck by a bicyclist while walking in Central Park.
Farmington Hills-based lawyer Richard Bernstein, blind since birth, wrote on his Facebook page that he suffered a fractured pelvis and hip and other injuries to his face and body in the collision Monday.
Bernstein, a marathon runner, was walking in a pedestrian path, wearing bright colors, when the bicyclist hit him from behind. The cyclist was traveling about 35 mph, police said.

Bernstein won't be running in the New York marathon this time. No news in the article on the condition of the biker or his bike. Not real good at sharing the path, I guess.

(12,606 posts)I would agree that there are a lot of effing bikers.
Unlike the effing motorists, who are ticketed more for being effing motorists; I would put very good money on it that effing bikers tend to get away with it more.

(46,192 posts)I usually defend cyclists, especially those cyclists in dense cities.
but recently I have had more close calls with cyclists than in a long time. there have always been lots of riders here, but more close calls in the past year than 10 years before that.

(20,587 posts)that is shared by bikes and walkers. As a walker, the bikers speeding on the trail make for a fun afternoon - NOT. The mix of leisurely walkers and speeding bikes does not work well.

But, also, not Metro.
He has plastic surgery and long rehab in his future.

(34,825 posts)that's like world class speed on a cycle. i hope the guy has a speedy recovery, and the cyclist sounds like a real dick, but i don't know that i'm buying the estimate of 35 mph.
