Outcry after Florida Border Patrol conducts checks, detains woman on Greyhound bus

Source: NBC News

by Carmen Sesin / Jan.23.2018 / 6:00 PM ET

MIAMI — A widely circulated video that allegedly shows agents from Customs and Border Patrol detaining a woman on a Greyhound bus, after demanding from people on board proof of citizenship, has sparked indignation by many.

The bus stopped at a station in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., during its route from Orlando to Miami on Friday afternoon. The driver announced there would be a “routine” security checkpoint and that is when two uniformed agents boarded the bus and announced they were from Border Patrol, according to Florida Immigrant Coalition, a Miami-based advocacy group.

The incident was captured on cell phone video by passengers on the back of the bus. One woman, who seemed puzzled, can be heard asking another passenger “is this new?” The video posted on the Florida Immigration Coalition’s Twitter account has more than 2.3 million views.

The woman on the bus had an expired tourist visa and was arrested, the Border Patrol confirmed to the Miami Herald. She is currently in detention at the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach.

Actual 1943 Nazi Germany travel permit, allowing one to travel from one city to another for a period of 15 days.

Remember back when we didn’t need those in the U.S.A.?

Welcome to Trump fascist AmeriKKKa!

I'm shaking my head, wondering what the hell does Florida need border patrol police for? I can see checking passports at the airports and boat docks, but Greyhound buses? They're not even going over the state line.

100 miles of any US border. Thus, the entire state of Florida is legal territory for them.

87 South; just outside of Keene there is a semi-permanent CBP checkpoint.

Didn’t even leave the state; much less an international border and I’m shaken down for information every time...

permissible. But until someone sues, they'll continue to feel ''empowered" by Trump's viciously anti-immigrant posture and keep pushing the envelope.

As I'd done about 50+ times in the past (my mother's family lives in Toronto, we visited often) I planned on using my driver's license for identification. I'd only been asked my citizenship, never asked to "prove" it.

The Canadian Customs officer (a nasty woman) told me that a driver's license wasn't sufficient to demonstrate citizenship, only residence.

Of course, that was before September 11, 2001. Since then I got a passport and always bring that with me.

But it's ludicrous for people traveling from one city within a state. Welcome to trump's America.

You seem unfamiliar with the "Real ID Act of 2005".

Here are some sources of info, especially important since some of some of the provisions related to commercial domestic air travel (which is regulated by the feds) just recently hit their target dates.

....not inter- or intra-state travel by car, bus, or train. And if we don't have the enhanced license (neither my wife nor I do) we can still travel by air if we have a passport or other state/federal issued identification.

But I'm glad you mentioned this, I have a passport but my wife's has expired, so I'm now in the process of getting hers current.

...but that's so I know where it is. Other than the TSA at the airport, nobody has ever asked to see it. But I guess that's going to change real soon.
