Trump to Schumer: 'If there is no wall, there is no DACA'

Source: Politico

By LOUIS NELSON 01/24/2018 07:44 AM EST

President Donald Trump reiterated late Tuesday night that funding for his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border remains a requirement for any deal to shield undocumented immigrants brought here as children from deportation, a declaration that came hours after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would take wall funding off the table in upcoming negotiations.

“Cryin’ Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!”

Democrats voted Monday to end a three-day government shutdown that began over an impasse over immigration and border security negotiations, with Democrats refusing to vote for a government funding bill unless it was paired with a deal to protect Dreamers. Schumer (D-N.Y.) eventually settled for an assurance from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that the chamber would hold a vote on immigration in the coming weeks.

Schumer, who took withering criticism from some in his own party for what has been characterized by some as a negotiation defeat, informed the White House Tuesday that a funding package for Trump’s border wall that he had offered as part of last-ditch negotiations last Friday was no longer on the table.

This is what happens when the RWNJs rule. repub House, repub Senate & repub White House. It is clear that some left leaners do not get what it means to have total power. How's that purity vote working out for ya? You yell and attack the Dems when there is very little they can do.

on this -- the real hard-cores.

And the November 6 midterms are coming up very fast. If the Republican Congress makes the dreadful mistake of deporting DACA kids who were raised here to foreign lands, it will be very bad for them. They won't be that stupid or suicidal, though.

Which will be regrettable for all of us, including all immigrants other than those affected by DACA.

I disagree that Democrats controlling both branches would have similar results. We are an extremely diverse party, to much so to stay this way forever, but right now a big tent for everyone but those who flock to the party of conservative white men and the wealthy archconservatives who mostly fund it. These days we are also the keepers of the ideology of government of, by and for the people, no second party available.

We have both the House and the Senate to overcome, and even if enough republicans thought having the wall was a boondoggle, and went against trump on this, (which is unlikely if the past is any reflection of the future), trump would veto it.

The question of course is how much power the Republicans will lose to us November 6, and we are seeing that their strategy for gaining, not losing, power includes fomenting insurrection against the federal government. What else does it include? Not how far would their sedition go if necessary and they could. I think we know that.

The Democratic Leaders response should be, "Very Respectfully Mr President, there will be a wall when you get the check from Mexico, until then, let us live up to the obligation we have to the dreamers." Very simple, he said Mexico will pay, let him live up to his promise.

If money has to be put up for the stupid wall to get DACA done, I say do it. I live in Michigan. A man here 30 years was deported on MLK Day. His wife is going to be a guest of my rep (Debbie Dingell) for the State of the Union Speech. Then we have a man from Romania taking refuge in a church in Downtown Detroit so he won't be deported. His wife has MS and needs him to take care of her needs. Finally on Jan 16th a doctor in Kalamazoo who has been here for 40 years was arrested. He is from Poland. He does not speak Polish. He came to the US at the age of 5.

trump and ICE are insane. If we don't get DACA done, we will see young folks being deported every night on our tvs.

Do the damn wall!

Wall or no wall, Trump's base thrives on two things and he knows it: Throwing them out, and keeping them out with a symbolic wall. Even 200 miles is enough for his photo-ops.

Schumer called his bluff. Now Trump can scare up the pesos to build that so called wall. ...and it just got ten feet higher.

it's well known that a few Repubs especially those down in that region (Governors, etc) don't want to pay for that stupid thing.

Schumer can't make anybody warm up to that idea.

When everyone knows you don't even have the card to put together a pair of twos, bluffing will not work. And clearly we cannot keep enough Senators in line to stave off another shutdown collapse/reversal. Schumer is doing all he can, but looks as if we're going to have to subsist on a shit sandwich diet until November, and even then, who knows. It burns my ass to see all the GOP and the President cackling gleefully and openly about their political win and the MSM just playing along with their narrative that "we" shut it down and then folded like a cheap tent.

you hit the nail on the head. BUT...now the Dems have to get their shit in order and get ON MESSAGE and hammer it home. Over and over and over again. Can they do it? History says no...but I'm hoping they can all get on the same page and do it this time. It's past time, and we need them to start doing their jobs a helluva lot better than they have been. I know...won't hold my breath.

And if they did, what would it look like?
Full funding for the wall will never get enough votes.
No DACA will never get enough votes.
So partial funding for the wall and DACA (just like presented to him last time) is pretty much the only thing that can get through Congress.
Will he sign it this time?
Will McConnell even let it come up for a vote if he doesn't think it will get signed?
If they vote and it fails- Repub fail.
If they vote and it passes and Trump doesn't sign- Trump fail.
If they don't vote- McConnell fail.

I'm sure McConnell has something up his sleeve but I'm not sure how Dems can come out of this looking bad.
Also, Schumer has known Trump for a long time. I expect he's pretty familiar with what Trump needs to make him feel good, and I suspect it's a very simple game of trading. Trump just needs to feel like he wins, but I bet he's easily fooled.
And keep Miller away!
