NSA DELETES HONESTY AND OPENNESS FROM CORE VALUES
Source: The Intercept
On January 12, however, the NSA removed the mission statement page which can still be viewed through the Internet Archive and replaced it with a new version. Now, the parts about honesty and the pledge to be truthful have been deleted. The agencys new top value is commitment to service, which it says means excellence in the pursuit of our critical mission.
Those are not the only striking alterations. In its old core values, the NSA explained that it would strive to be deserving of the great trust placed in it by national leaders and American citizens. It said that it would honor the publics need for openness. But those phrases are now gone; all references to trust, honor, and openness have disappeared.
The agency previously stated on its website that it embraced transparency and claimed that all of its activities were aimed at ensuring the safety, security, and liberty of our fellow citizens. That has also been discarded

So the Post Truth- Alternative Facts of Trump world continue to trickle down in our government agency's policy changes.
We saw the State Department remove Human Rights concerns as a top priority of our foreign policy interactions in favor of economic opportunity and the wholesale clearing of staffers there and across the board in other agencies, the madness never ends, now we no longer need to be honest with ourselves anymore

We really should be proud of the enemies ranged against us. They say a lot about us, and I'm not talking about their lies.

Y'all are a tough crowd, but I also should add I would rather hang around a bunch of smart ass folks than dumb asses, if you will forgive my honesty

I may not post much, but I have been on this board for a decade, and I am far from pro-russian, I have no love for any Russia-reset, for oil and gas profits and no tolerance for any of the KGOP enablers

What a creatively inaccurate inference, regardless of your alleged honesty.

(1,142 posts)I was just surprised by the attacking the story's accuracy because it appeared in a paper that Glenn Greenwald also writes for.
Judith Miller has written stories for the New York Times as well as other writers that later turned out to have been wildly inaccurate, was what what I was intending to reference by that remark and the attack on all media as being peddlers of fake news. I do think it's a good idea to question what you read, consider the source etc...
But this story, about an agency that is known for fronts and secrecy removing honesty and openness from their core values could have been an opportunity for some humorous banter seems to have turned for at least a couple of you into a game of let's prod the poster
Now I am curious as to why you question my honesty? Maybe I am just not as creative of a writer as you're suggesting

(16,245 posts)It is an incredibly dangerous institution and contrary to a free and open democracy. So, for that matter are all the spy agencies, but the NSA is the worst. They spy on us. At least the CIA only (usually) kills bad (according to them, at least) guys in foreign countries.

They don't read your personal emails unless they are confirming that one that got caught up in the wide net is not related to terrorist activity. They couldn't red all those emails if they tried. In a world where terrorists could destroy a city with a nuclear device, or render it uninhabitable with a dirty bomb, I sleep better knowing we have the line of defense our intelligence agencies provide.

(1,660 posts)For intel agencies, opacity and deceit are essential tools of their mission, at least the public-facing parts of it. To say anything else is hypocritical. I'd say that changing their mission statement was honest. They need to be open and honest to their oversight bodies only. That's where it ends. IMNSHO.
