Emmy-winning 'Roots' star Olivia Cole dies in Mexico at 75

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Olivia Cole, who won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Matilda, wife to Chicken George in the landmark miniseries "Roots," has died, a burial association executive said. She was 75.

Cole died last Friday at her home in San Miguel de Allende, a central Mexico city, said Linda Cooper, executive secretary of the 24 Horas de San Miguel de Allende cremation and burial group.

The cause of death was a heart attack, Cooper said Thursday.

Cole received an Emmy Award for her role in ABC's smash hit 1977 drama based on African-American writer Alex Haley's book "Roots," which dramatized the lives of his ancestors from West Africa to slavery and post-Civil War.

I actually remember her form the "Backstairs at the White House" a TV series bout the work at, well, the backstairs of the White House, relations with the first family, and especially with a 24 window of changing everything when a new president came. It may have been based on real stories since they mentioned real names of presidents.

When Roots first aired, we didn't get an ABC station. So we didn't watch it. In the years since, I have neglected to find a way to watch it. Do you think there will be a retrospective again?

like BET for the 35th... and there were 40th anniversary retrospects in 2017 along with a complete remake version on the History Channel (done in 2016) -

I actually haven't watched the remake series as I am so ingrained in the original having watched it back in 1977 when it came out (also recorded it on VHS during one of the previous re-airings... possibly one about 15 years ago - I think a 25th anniversary airing... Hallmark Channel had one of these airings).

so it is difficult to find on any subscription services (although I saw the UK has it on a youtube channel but it is not available to those in the U.S.).

Definitely a fan in terms of how powerful and iconic it became (I still have a hardback version of the book bought back then). I also thought the sequel - "Roots: The Next Generations" was even more historically fascinating because it goes from post-slavery through WW1, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights era of the '50s & '60s, and into the early '70s. It had a similar "all-star" cast and gave Marlon Brando his first and only Emmy award as George Lincoln Rockwell, American Nazi Party founder. Since Brando didn't "do television", the Roots sequel was his only television performance (although he did interviews).

They also sell the DVDs...

The rights were bought by producer David Wolper back then (he passed away in 2010). I'm assuming the rights passed onto his heirs since his son Mark produced the 2016 remake, and apparently the heirs are keeping it restricted as well (outside of for educational use from what I have seen, where schools had access to the full series on video years ago).

Of course another possibility is a local library. They may have the miniseries on DVD for borrowing (and for free)!

I don't have Amazon Prime, but my daughter does. But that is pricey. Maybe I'll get the book.

and it also looks like they will be running the sequel "Roots: The Next Generations" as well starting tomorrow morning at 11 am ET and going all day and night through to early Monday morning. I thought the sequel was just as good if not better than the first because it covers from the Civil War all the way through to the early '70s, and there is quite a bit of history in there too. The sequel was also the one that has Marlon Brando's one and only television performance as an actor and he won an Emmy for it.

Thanks for the heads up!

Her character aged in the mini-series and she played it as steadfast vs the flamboyant "Chicken George".

Condolences to the family and thank you for gracing the screen!
