Ellison exploring Minnesota AG run
Source: Politico
Keith Ellison, the progressive congressman and deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, is exploring a run for Minnesota attorney general, according to four people hes discussed the possibility with.
...snip...
With his active organizing and fundraising base amplified through his close alliance with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) Ellison would likely scramble a field of lesser known candidates thats begun to take shape.
Ellison did not respond to efforts to reach him directly, and a spokesman declined comment.
First elected to Congress in 2006, Ellison has grown listless and bored in the House, according to multiple people whove spoken with him in recent months. Hes still far from even being a ranking member on a subcommittee, and Democratic prospects of retaking the majority in the House soon remain uphill.
Ellison has also told friends about chafing at being the number two at the DNC, occasionally clashing with Tom Perez, who beat him for the top spot before appointing him to his current position. More often he expresses frustration at not being able to set the direction for the official party apparatus, according to several whove spoken to him.

(58,785 posts)Minnesotans might have a new attorney general after the fall election, even if many voters dont know it yet. Behind the scenes, theres a major campaign going on to be the states top attorney. ... Another reason: Current DFL Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson hasnt announced her plans yet, though she is widely rumored to be leaving the office to run for governor.
If that happens, the race could dramatically change the shape and priorities of the office. For the better part of the last two decades, the Minnesota attorney general's office has been controlled by Swanson or her close political ally, former Attorney General Mike Hatch. Under their leadership, the AG has become closely associated with a specific brand of consumer protection cases, and more recently, in joining other attorneys general in opposing policies of the Trump administration.
But many of the candidates lining up for the job five Democrats and one Republican, so far would take the job in a vastly different direction. The race has opened up the first major debate in years over the role of the attorney general, a constitutional office that has focused on widely diverging priorities depending on whos leading it.

This is from January 10. So, now 6 Democrats maybe, though most said they'd drop out if the current AG ran for another term. A rundown on what each of the 5 Dem (and currently 1 Repub) candidates wants to do with this office is in this article. MN's generally Democratic leadership has been serving its people far better than those of most states, as all of these candidates suggest.

(53,787 posts)in the Democratic Party nationally so I'm wondering, doesn't a run for state AG seem like a step down?

I think that the AG job would be a good fit for him.
