USOC gives USA Gymnastics board six days to resign or federation will be decertified

Source: USA Today

USA Gymnastics’ status as the sport’s national governing body will be terminated unless it meets six conditions set out by the U.S. Olympic Committee, including the resignation of the entire board by next Wednesday.

USOC CEO Scott Blackmun outlined the conditions in an email sent Thursday to the USA Gymnastics board. While Blackmun had called on the board to resign Wednesday in an open letter to the Olympic community, the email was far more specific in both what the USOC expects from USA Gymnastics and the repercussions if it doesn’t deliver.

The letter comes a day after former national team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 girls and young women, including Olympic champions Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber.

“We do not base these requirements on any knowledge that any individual USAG staff or board members had a role in fostering or obscuring Nassar’s actions,” Blackmun wrote. “Our position comes from a clear sense that USAG culture needs fundamental rebuilding.”

That whole sport needs reforming. It is sick and creepy. Why are the women's teams so young, while the men's teams are older? Why do the women have to wear skimpy outfits and the men get to wear pants? Sexist and just plain weird to me.

who no longer compete (and who want to serve) should be installed on a permanent oversight board with a separate budget, investigatory and subpoena powers.
If not, there should be a total and complete boycott by every USA Gymnastics member from ages 3 on up.
That financial hit would get their attention.
Just my opinion.

Needs to be rebuilt from the bottom up, with all new people. Including a heavy dose of those who experienced crimes that the old guard covered up.

USA Gymnastics board to resign amid sex abuse scandal: spokeswoman

(Reuters) - The remaining directors of USA Gymnastics will resign following revelations that the former national team doctor sexually abused female athletes, complying with a demand from the U.S. Olympic Committee, a spokeswoman for gymnastics group said on Friday.

The doctor, Larry Nassar, was handed an effective life prison sentence this week, following days of emotional statements by gymnasts, including Olympic medalists Aly Raisman and Simone Biles.

The USOC had threatened to strip the group of its power to run its sport if the remaining 16 directors did not resign by Wednesday. Five have already resigned as a result of the scandal.

“USA Gymnastics will comply with the USOC requirements,” Leslie King, a spokeswoman for USA Gymnastics, said in an e-mail on Friday.
