Big-time TV ad buys point to suddenly competitive congressional race (PA 18th district)
Source: McClatchy
The National Republican Congressional Committee is ramping up its involvement in the special election in Pennsylvanias 18th congressional district, launching a television ad buy that begins on Monday and will run through Election Day in March a sign of how nationalized and competitive the race in the typically conservative district is shaping up to be.
So far the committee has put nearly $300,000 behind the buy backing Republican Rick Saccone, according to a media buying source, but the length of the buy suggests the committee plans to spend even more between now and March 13.
News of the buy comes a day after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee moved to go on air in the district, spending $224,000 in an investment that marks the first involvement of a national Democratic group in the race. Democrats had previously waffled on whether to spend money on the race, concerned that victory was out of reach even if polling showed a closer-than-expected contest.
Other major conservative groups have already mobilized in the race, determined to ward off an upset of Saccone by Democrat Conor Lamb, after a string of recent electoral defeats everywhere from the Alabama special election Senate race to a Wisconsin state senate contest. Republicans are nervous about Saccones ability to raise money, as well as broader national dynamics, including an ultra-energized progressive base that has turned out in strong numbers in special elections at every level of government in the Trump era.

(19,565 posts)Which is what I'm guessing prompted the RCC to pay attention and pony up their money for ad buys.

(218 posts)For Conor,
We are pounding on the pavement, knocking on doors
We are calling
We are meeting, we are delivering yard signs
We are spreading the word. YES, WE HAVE A GOOD CANDIDATE, a good, strong candidate who tells us -- "Democrats fight for working people and refuse to leave anyone behind. I'm proud of that legacy, and I'll work every day to do the same for the people in our district." Conor Lamb
He is a young, brave, marine, a former prosecutor.
The other guy-- is the legal mind behind torture in Abu Graib. He has told us, "I was Trump before Trump was Trump" as he thumps his Bible and tells us what his God wants us to do.
So I want to ask him, "Rick, who would Jesus torture?"

This is a sign of the things to come in the midterms. Dems can't get overly confident about the "blue wave" coming. The GOP has a ton of money and they play dirty, always have and always will. Now with social media and right wing propaganda channel Fux Ruse in the mix we will have a lot of work to do to get our people to run and to vote.

So the votes are probably there. It's going to be a matter of focusing on unions and (unfortunately) not having "party purity" to get this seat.

(19,565 posts)The internal polling must be hopeful or the DCCC wouldn't have just dumped $224K into the race. Fingers crossed we take this seat.
BumRushDaShow
(129,096 posts)because Eddie Munster's PAC dropped $1.7 million into the race for ads too.
Thing is - this year, the GOP is gonna have to spend a whole lot more money on these races then in the past because I think pretty much every, or at least most seats are being contested.

(19,565 posts)Im thrilled the GOP are being forced to defend these seats. I smile each time I hear theyre having to defend seats in races which werent previously considered competitive.
Add to that the sheer increase in volume of of competitors theyre facing and its bound to put strain on their funds.
BumRushDaShow
(129,096 posts)But see the hope here is that the PA SC ruling forcing them to redraw the congressional districts will hold for this year's election and we can get some seats back that we had before they gerrymandered the heck out of this state.
