MIKE PENCE SAYS NANCY PELOSI 'LIVES IN A DIFFERENT WORLD' AFTER DESCRIBING $1,000 AS 'CRUMBS'
BY LINLEY SANDERS ON 2/1/18 AT 9:42 AM
Vice President Mike Pence slammed Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi as "out of touch" with the American people for diminishing Republican-led tax cuts. He used the opportunity to highlight himself as a common man who comes from "the Joseph A. Bank wing" of the West Wing.
At a Republican policy retreat in West Virginia on Wednesday evening, Pence praised the tax cuts approved in President Donald Trump's first legislative victory, telling the lawmakers that three million Americans received bonuses as a result. He criticized Democrats like Pelosi, who said the bonuses are "crumbs" compared to what corporate leaders could afford to give their employees.
"I mean, the truth is, any leader in America that would say $1,000 in the pockets of working families is crumbs is out of touch with the American people," Pence said.
House Minority Leader Pelosi denounced large company bonuses as "crumbs that they are giving workers," while corporate America reaps the financial reward from the Trump tax bill. The former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, also shrugged off the bonuses as insignificant, saying, "I'm not sure that $1,000which is taxed, taxablegoes very far for almost anyone."

(16,091 posts)$1000 bonus, minus state and federal taxes, results in an amount between $450-$700...multiply $700 by 365 days and you're getting $1.91 per day!
You can't even buy a Happy Meal for $1.91...so describing it as crumbs is pretty accurate!!!

(19,868 posts)I thought I was rich when I was allowed $1000 for moving. When I received it, it was less than $600, which made me very unhappy. Even the full $1000 won't pay a month's rent or mortgage in most places, isn't enough for a new deposit, won't pay a semester's tuition except at the cheapest community colleges. Maybe it would pay a non-major repair on a car.
And the fact that companies felt like they needed to lay off hundreds of workers at the same time is worrisome.

It's not $1000.
73 cents a week. Just under $40 a year. That was the increase I saw in my paychecks starting with the first one of 2018.
And I can no longer claim my student loan interest as a deduction, which negates the $40/yr.
And at the same time, my health insurance premiums went up 11% as a result of the mandate being repealed. That's just this benefits year - who knows how much more it'll increase in Mar '19.
And let's not even get into how much smaller my refund will be now that the deduction for state & local taxes is gone.

State and Local taxes have been lumped in with Property Taxes.
You can claim up to $10,000 in any combination you'd like.
Unfortunately for me, my Southern California Property taxes are more
than $10,000, so I won't be able to claim any part over that, and since
the $10,000 have been used, I can't claim my state taxes of local taxes
as deductions.
Also, starting in 2019, I can no longer deduct spousal support, while the
X will no longer have to claim that as income. So I end up paying for taxes
on money I will never use.
I did hear yesterday, that everyone gets $24,000 deduction right off the top.
So, if you make $50,000/yr., your tax base start at $26,000.
I have not been able to verify this information, so don't take it as

(10,912 posts)That's the standard deduction for Married Filing Jointly
For singles it's $12,000
For Head of Household, I don't know what it is
Yes, that's quite an increase in the standard deduction from before, but it's been mostly offset by loss of the $4050 per-person per-dependent exemption.
On the other hand, for taxpayers with children, the child tax credit has been doubled, from $1,000 to $2,000. And for someone in say the 25% tax bracket, that extra $1,000 credit is equivalent to a $4,000 deduction. Well, now its the 22% tax bracket, not the 25% tax bracket.
For someone in the 15% tax bracket that $1,000 is the same as a 1,000/0.15 = $6,666 deduction. Well, its the 12% bracket now.
It is complex.

(3,164 posts)us Californians are going to be more likely to squeeze Sacramento for tax cuts and/or support republicans if we can't write off state taxes. It's possibly an effective strategy; as long as I can write off my CA taxes, I have little incentive to NOT want lots of services from the state government, if I can't deduct what Sacramento takes me much less likely to approve a bond issue or any such thing. Brilliantly evil in a way.

(1,093 posts)By that standard, a thousand bucks ain't much at all. Their hypocrisy knows know bounds.
I remember it coming up in a VP debate where Chris Wallace used Hannity's talking point that 250K was middle class. I think he even used the example of a firefighter and a teacher or college professor. Granted, depending on where you live, after many years of service that paring may make that much, but the figures are what is "middle class" is certainly a lot less than 200K.
On edit, I don't think comments like this from her helps our cause at all.

(51,662 posts)The $1,000 bonuses at Home Depot and Wal Mart go only to full-timers with over 20 years with the company. The vast majority at those companies' workers won't qualify. At best, they will qualify for bonuses in the $100 range. And that's pre-tax, pre-deductions. Most will only see about $50 cash in pocket. So yes, this is crumbs in anyone's world.
And that is a 1-time payment, NOT a permanent raise, unlike the employers' PERMANENT 40% tax cut.
