Michigan jail releases man in frigid weather with no shirt

Source: Associated Press

Updated 1:04 pm, Friday, February 2, 2018

LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) — A sheriff's office in western Michigan has changed part of its policy after an inmate was allowed to leave jail in below freezing temperatures without wearing a shirt or shoes.

The Ludington Daily News reports that Nick Wroble left Mason County's jail Tuesday bare-chested and in socks. Temperatures during the day ranged from 18 degrees to 24 degrees.

The old policy required jail clothing to remain inside the facility. Relatives also could not bring clothing before an inmate's release.

Sheriff Kim Cole said Wroble was given his shirt and other belongings and spent more than a minute playing outside with his dog before getting into a waiting car. Cole said Wroble didn't want dog hair on the shirt.

When you drive up the Western side of the lower peninsula, you turn right at Ludington to go to Traverse City, etc. It's really beautiful there but lots of Lake effect snow.

This story is weird. There must be more to it.

Man Released From Jail Without Shirt Prompts Mason Co. Jail Policy Changes
February 1, 2018 Ashley VanOchten, Jeff Blakeman

A man was released from jail into 19 degree weather without a shirt or shoes.

It prompted an outcry from his family, and changes to jail policy.

The Mason County Jail told the man’s mother he could only leave jail wearing what he had on when he came in.

But that meant standing in the cold with very little clothing on.

He should have been given shoes since he didn't have any, but the article said he had a shirt but didn't put it on. The shoes part is the jail's fault. But he was the idiot that didn't want to put his shirt on because he didn't want to get dog hair on it. Even if they had forced him to put his shirt on, he could have still taken it off. And then he got in a waiting car.

In Houston they let women out of jail at 3am in a bad part of town about a mile from the nearest bus stop. And the bus doesn't come until about 5:30am. This is more of a story than an idiot without shoes that refuses to put his shirt on.

I was arrested in my home in the Danish winter. And released some days later when it was snowing. I was put outside in my indoor clothing and shoes, and they kept my money and phone for a week more. Had to hitchhike across Denmark to some friends, since my house was still locked away, and they also kept the key. Later I got some money compensation for the arrest, but not for them kicking me out in the cold...
