Polls swing toward GOP, easing fears of midterm disaster

Source: MSN/The Hill

Republicans are feeling better about their prospects in the midterm elections, buoyed by recent polls that show their numbers improving.

An ebullient President Trump touted the shift in public sentiment reflected in recent polls during a joint Senate-House Republican retreat in West Virginia this week.

"I just looked at some numbers, you've even done better than you thought," Trump told lawmakers, citing poll numbers he discussed Thursday with National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) chairman Steve Stivers (R-Ohio).

"The numbers are pretty good and that's one example of how things are getting better," Stivers told reporters after discussing polling numbers with Trump.

Can you imagine how good Democrats would have done if they had an entire media apparatus dedicated to making them look good? Not mere bias, but 24/7 apparatus supported by a willingness to use the powers of the Federal government for political ends.

I think our Democracy is doomed as Republicans are increasingly willing to go all in and collude with the White House in obstructing justice and ignoring the law.

What? You are going to take to the streets?

IT DOES NOT MATTER BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER BE SEEN BY THE 40 PERCENT OF PEOPLE PLUGGED INTO THE RW MEDIA BUBBLE!

If we cannot even convince the folks closest to us, the racist brother-in-law, our Fox News watching father, that Trump is perverting our Constitution, how is walking in the streets going to convince strangers? Indeed, I bet a lot of us just choose not discuss politics to avoid the unpleasantness in a daily act of cowardice.

Democracies die. It happened in Germany under Hitler. It happened in Venezuela. It is happening here.

But her, don't worry. Even on the left, you have Susan Sarandon, Cornel West, and Ed Schultz who will tell you that it would have been far worse if you voted for the neoliberal Democrats.

the noise about "the memo," BEFORE its actual release caused a euphoria crash.

We had a bit of that here. One of our neighbors reportedly confidently told another that its release would cause the media to turn on the Democrats and we'd be in big trouble. We haven't asked for an update on that, but will.

It's about their cultural brand being usurped by other brands. As long as white people are the majority of people exercising their right to vote we're going to have this problem.

My husband is white but he's very secure so he votes his interest instead of his grievance. We care about other people so when we vote we feel a responsibility to make sure our vote will makes their lives better too.

Land a misleading story to tip favor the week before people make decisions and you see the results. HRC and 45 were so close that the tiny feathering adjustments of the Comey email announcement and the Russian meddling threw the election to the Rs. 3 months before an election if the polls show Candidate X with 70% and candidate Z with 30%, who is going to care enough to pay attention for the next three months until X destroys Z? who is going to tune is to cable news shows?

the media is going to do whatever they can to prop up the guy who could get blown out.

The relevant segment starts at about 58 minutes:

I can’t think of anything Twitler and rethugs would do to make the numbers better.

But I think the market is going to crater and interest rates are going to shoot up making borrowing money more expensive. I was on the fence last year about buying a new car. Decided to buy and went I went to credit union to get loan they told me they were raising rates next year so it was a good time for me to buy. Since then the rates has increased 1%.

Just like the stock market, which looks like it is going down.

How long until big corps adjust to trade agreements going away? How long before jobs start shrinking?

With the scotus about to lock political gerrymandering in as a reality, and the doj about to be fully weaponized, does any of it matter?

We still have voter supression running rampant. We still are awash in dark money. We are still flooded with targeted bots pretending to be people.

This is not exactly an easy to call "wave". Nothing is certain. Unless of course we just give up and start fighting amongst ourselves over daca, blm, metwo, and every other cornerstone we lay down.

So, do we just let the bastards win?

When Dems are in control the fascists bitch, bitch, bitch about the National debt. When The fascists are in power they spend like drunken sailors, cut taxes to the rich, drive up the debt then blame the Dems and the Dems help by fretting over the deficit. The fascists call it supply side economics, I call it the biggest con in ameriKan history.

Poll numbers go up and they go down. Some bump from the SOTU speech and generally positive economic news. However, LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE!! The party in power always loses seats in the midterms. Dems/Progressives HATE Trump and HATE the GOP and will be more enthusiastic to vote. So it looks much better for Dems than the R's. Just look at special elections and VA and NJ last November. Dems have over-performed up and down the line.

BUT DO NOT BE COMPLACENT!! The Dems need a unified and much better message than just "We are not Trump." It also needs to be about GOOD HIGH PAYING PERMANENT JOBS, Healthcare, and Education. The Dems can't just talk "values" and they sure all hell can't just talk about government programs and abstractions like "civil rights."

What drives people into the voting booth is tangibles like JOBS JOBS JOBS and healthcare and education and higher wages.

The Trump corruption and scandals will also come home to roost.

But more than anything, the Dems need a STRONG, CLEAR, and ATTRACTIVE economic message which has been SORELY lacking.
