Super Bowl 2018: Eagles win first Super Bowl 41-33, stop Tom Brady, Patriots
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
MINNEAPOLIS For decades upon decades, parents will tell their children about Feb. 4, 2018. Theyll remember when Doug Pederson called the trick play at the goal line, when the Eagles kept attacking Tom Brady, and when the greatest dynasty in NFL history fell to an improbable champion from Philadelphia.
The Eagles are Super Bowl champions. You can read that again. Its not going away. The Eagles beat the Patriots, 41-33, at U.S. Bank Stadium to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the first time in franchise history. A team with a backup quarterback and that wore underdog masks throughout the playoffs because they were never favored to win sent Brady and Bill Belichick home with a Super Bowl loss.

(45,806 posts)I don't mean to sound like a PIA, but I sure didn't want to see Mr. Arrogance win again. I'm from Pgh. and I know what a great quarterback is like. NEVER did I ever see arrogance in Terry Bradshaw. To this day, since he's now one of the announcers, he still doesn't act like he's better than anyone else. With Brady, that's all I saw. I'm happy for the Eagles & happy for Philladel;phia, asnd happy for awll the fans in Pennsylvania. GREAT GAME!

And the shredding of the Pats D.
Like I said - best team tonight won. It was a whiplash game - the ball moved up and down the field so fast!

(19,204 posts)that Philadelphia spoiled Brady, Belichick, Kraft, and Trump's night tonight. I fully expect Trump to tweet that New England won by the greatest amount ever since Super Bowls began. It really must have screwed with his version of reality tonight. I hope he lost a LOT of money wagering on his fellow fascists as well.
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans. It's been a long time coming.

I had heard earlier on here it was "2005".. just off by a year. It was awhile ago.

The city was doing all sorts of wild things to not jinx it.
Saw the thread about the boycott! Maybe Brady can do the honors at the WH - 2 losers together!
Cha
(297,818 posts)I'd like to hear more about that!
Weird.. I just googled Brady and skipping out when President Obama had the NEP at the WH.. and saw he skipped last year when they won, too..
Oh well.. no chance this year!
Yay Eagles

(15,290 posts)Phila City Hall, the largest completely masonry building in the world, is topped by a statue of our commonwealth's founder, Wm Penn. Usually when Phila sports teams are involved in the playoffs, the statue gets adorned with the jersey of which ever team is playing. But this year, Mayor Kenney didn't do that so as not to "jinx" the team.

And the Phillies had earlier missed out on the World Series in 1993 -
Cha
(297,818 posts)It worked!
BumRushDaShow
(129,669 posts)were related to putting team hats and what not on the statue of Billy Penn on top of City Hall - like they did a few times for the Phillies and Flyers and they ended up with subsequent losses. I think that was why PECO said they didn't include any Eagles messages as part of their lighted message scroll on top of the building. They plan to add something now!

(297,818 posts)I don't blame Philly for doing everything they could to break the losing streak!
What they did before wasn't working.. so let's do it differently this year.
snip// from first link..
Dressing up the statue is also avoided. There have been times where a hat or jersey of a team competing for a world championship has been placed on the statue and every time the statue was decorated, the team lost. The statue was also not decorated during the 2008 World Series and the team won. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has stated there will be not be any article of clothing put on William Penn.
William Penn's statue didn't like that!
BumRushDaShow
(129,669 posts)(eschewing bragging), where William Penn, who was a big Quaker and scoured through a number of villages in what is now modern Germany, brought many Quakers here in the 1690s and later. They were abolitionists and many of their descendants are still here.
Cha
(297,818 posts)bragging isn't good.
Quakers sound like really nice people.
I just flashed that Nixon was one.. like trump is a "Christian" evidently.

(15,290 posts)They got that when they signed James Harrison after he pouted his way out of Pittsburgh. Harrison disrespected the Steelers, the Rooneys and most importantly, the Towel. Nothing turns out well for those who do that.

(10,844 posts)Philly is going nuts. My older son he didn't believe this many fireworks existed in the Universe. And our friend Tommy V, whose only wish was to live long enough to see the Eagles play the Super Bowl, got his wish. And more.
Even my husband, born and bred in Philly, was speechless. Unreal! The Eagles really flew tonight. Right into the history books. Congrats to all.

(129,669 posts)They could maybe justify that due to the marginally freezing temps after the rain we got yesterday and then a temp drop.
City schools are open though and I'm sure many schools and businesses will have a larger than normal absentee rate - although people could still claim "the flu" which is running rampant here.
BigmanPigman
(51,642 posts)I still remember my school closing number (318) 37 years after my graduation. I prayed for that number to be called on the radio. It would go like this ; 315, 316, 317,319, 320....
Are you going into work? I doubt it will easy to focus on work for a few hours at least.
BumRushDaShow
(129,669 posts)And although Philly schools were technically "#100" none of the stations ever used the number for the Philly Public or Parochial (now called "Archdiocesan" ) schools.
They have pretty much stopped reading the numbers on the air and mainly put them on their websites plus a lot of school systems do blast phone calls/texts/emails to parents to announce school status. Kindof takes the fun out of sitting through announcers reading hundreds of numbers trying to hear yours.

(2,074 posts)I live in the Philly suburbs, and after the game last night lots of folks were running around the street, hollering and shooting off fireworks. I don't normally watch football, but even I watched last night. It was sweet to see the Patriots go down, since they are "Trump's team." It was even sweeter to see our hometown team win. Newly minted Eagles fan here!

(43,364 posts)but always did wonder if innovation could beat the rigid mindset of coaches that play by the rules. In the day, many wore fedoras, no?
Line up for 3 downs like the Maginot lines, then punt. Rush through the middle where all the players are.
Size and weight trumps speed. Only experienced players and coaches are any good. No one from outside
the big leagues understands anything about it.
Guess we saw where that mentality went. Home.
The Eagles won something? This is the peak of something. All bets are off.
