(9,898 posts)even if it is totally bull because it fits the righty worldview. I had a a person of the diehard right tell me a couple years ago that in Europe the government looks at everybodys mail. I asked where this information came from and the response was basically that it was a known fact.

(3,515 posts)I do. I lived in 4 European countries and had great health care for difficult situations in every one of them.
Do you suppose Trump might be talking off the top of his head without knowing what he is talking about? Do you think he would stoop so low as to do that?
Anyway. I know what I am talking about because I lived it. And single payer is not necessarily just a government-run system. But it is a system in which those who care for you are paid well, but the profit-taking is reasonable.
Please see the film Drug Short, one of the best episodes in Dirty Money by Netflix which demonstrates the potential (not the definite unfairness) for overcharging for drugs in our system.
And single payer, universal healthcare is not necessarily just run by the government. And in our system, we have had county hospitals and charitable hospitals, but our healthcare system is poorly organized for all too many people even now and it was worse before Obamacare.
Our life expectancy is relatively low. That tells the whole story about our healthcare compared to countries that have single payer. Single payer refers to the fact that everyone pays into the insurance funding usually a percentage of your pay or your receipts, and everyone is covered equally. In some countries the government covers and organizes, administers the healthcare, and in some countries the money that is collected is paid to private non-profits. There are different ways of organizing the delivery of single payer healthcare. I am strongly for it because I lived in countries that have it, and I liked it.

Much of my family is from Texas, from Littlefield to Houston, Dallas to Corpus. They are all Dems. They have been voting Democratic their whole lives, based on their Christian values. It would be nice if things started going their way.

(8,759 posts)America has never done anything forward thinking unless its a time of crisis.
Prior to FDR, the Republicans burned down the economy, and it took the Great Crash and a few years before the American people would elect FDR.
Its the nature of our people to sit on our hands until everything blows up in our faces. I don't see America taking a chance on an FDR-esque person until that happens.

(1,279 posts)I have VA and my wife has Medicare and CHAMPVA. The only thing we pay for are her glasses, the exam is free because a problem she has with her eyes. I have been on VA healthcare since 1995 and it is better than anything else I have had even in the old days when workers got it free and the family plan cost $25. Yes, I am that old. The only way it will happen is if the Democrats ruled the presidency and both houses of Congress.

(2,314 posts)These ridiculous Fox News talking points have been the right's contribution to public discourse here in the U.S. for the past 25 years or more, maybe pre-dating Fox News back to Reagan's blithe dismissal of governmental functions as "government IS the problem."
Now that we have an idiot who's willing to say (tweet) this bullshit to the world, the more the world can see what we've been dealing with and denounce the talking points as sheer idiocy.
But then again, sheer idiots probably won't listen.
C'mon, Mr. Mueller.

(14,178 posts)Because conservatives, real conservatives, look at that bottom line. They are SUPPOSED to be the kind of party, like traditional Republicans, that are concerned with paying the least in taxes to get the most bang for the buck. Any form of single payer, taxpayer funded, backed up by a national health care law including a minimum guarantee, whether distributed by all public or a public/private partnership, will cost half as much, at least, as the current US system.
But the neo-Republican is not a conservative. They are reduced to empty shills for whomever will feed them from the trough and fund their campaigns, and keep them in power. Plus passing whatever laws will gain their businesses and their donors businesses greater profits, whether that is cutting environmental standards, taking park lands, cutting taxes for themselves and their peers and recovering the money from programs and services for the 99%, etc...
I still think Democrats should be pounding out more all the advantages from a conservative point of view to counter the "they only want free stuff" meme. Another conservative angle is that when bidding on international jobs, which is more and more common with globalization, other countries, with a single payer system, are at an advantage because they do not have to include the companies employee healthcare insurance costs, or if there is, it is only an add-on. Most of the healthcare costs are born by the workers through their taxes.
