'People are angry': Pain turns political in Parkland after school shootings

Source: The Washington Post

By Kevin Sullivan, Tim Craig and William Wan February 17 at 11:43 AM

PARKLAND, Fla. — On a day when Parkland began burying its young dead, a dozen people stood on a street corner holding up “More Gun Control” signs as passing drivers honked and shouted in support.

“Look what we started,” said Carlos Rodriguez, 50, who was on his way to work when he stopped to join the protest. “Look at all these people. One match started a whole forest fire.”

This most peaceful and orderly of places has been devastated by the most violent and chaotic of acts. And amid the horse trails, bike paths and gated communities of a city that prides itself on “country elegance,” the response to a shooting Wednesday that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been a raw, growing and furious burst of activism and demand for change.

“We’re not a politically charged community — this is new, because we’ve had enough,” said Grace Solomon, a city commissioner who is organizing a large group of parents and students to travel to Tallahassee, the state capital, and then to the District to demand “common-sense gun legislation.”

These kids are very vocal. There is talk of a national walk out day for high school students to bring attention to the need for some different and strong action.

A national protest and voter uprising is going to be needed to overcome the war chest of the NRA.

of a Congress that doesn't remotely reflect or act on the views of the majority and that this applies to other issues as well as gun control.

The one difference seems to be that people are more fed up about a lot of things. Maybe we have finally hit an anger tipping point.

Berryville Student Arrested after Making School Threats

Posted: Feb 16, 2018 06:03 AM CST

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- A Berryville student was arrested after making school threats, officials say.

The Berryville School District said a middle school student was taken into juvenile custody after threats were made on social media.

"At no time were students or staff in any danger," the school district said.

The student did not have any weapons, according to officials.

A student at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School was arrested Friday in connection with threats of violence posted on social media, Wichita police and the Catholic Diocese of Wichita confirmed.

School officials were alerted to the threat at 7 a.m. Friday, diocesan spokesman Matt Vainer said in a prepared statement.

“We were made aware of a posting on social media by one of our students which was inappropriate and concerning in regards to the safety of our school community,” Vainer said. “Due to the nature of the post, the student has been taken into custody and the administration is working with law enforcement. We have been assured at this time, that there is no legitimate threat to any of our students, or the school.

“We have notified all parents of this situation as we want them to know that we are taking every precaution necessary to insure the safety of the Bishop Carroll Catholic High School community.”

We need to change, with a critical mass, the public perception of the NRA, to be like the KKK.

They are now an extremist organization this is toxic to public health and well being.

I mean kids being murdered right in school are just seen as collateral damage by these....well terrorists. I am totally agnostic but should there be a Hell I hope the lot of gun crazies wind up there.

What so-called President goes to a resort after 17 U.S. citizens were brutally murdered in a mass shooting?

All we need is a photo of the Orange Clown playing golf again?

along with blaming liberal hollywood moral rot and lack of religion in liberal big govt schools etc.

merely because we give those stations a free speech free ride they're going to scream until republican reps scream and wray takes the blame and is forced to resign

as long as liberals ignore the radio we're really fucked up

we let 300 lying blowhards on 1500 radio station propaganda monopoly generate minority, made-to-order constituencies to scream and enable republicans to obstruct and dismantle.

the only advantage those corrupt fuckers have is talk radio, and we even let 88 major universities endorse 260 of those stations

of the right also and has been for a long time -- during which they voted right anyway. Cohesion and passion against a common enemy are what they're good at, of course, their strength.

But as above, I'm wondering if this hasn't created a perfect storm of problems on the right that will finally persuade some to just not vote, and a small but real number to vote Democrat.

Agree that some control of mass dissemination of political lies is going to be required to maintain democracy.

Thank goodness he was on the other side of the school from the shooting. He spent 2 sleepless nights, because of a rumor that his favorite teacher had been shot. The relief when he saw her on tv Friday morning was palpable. Shot at, but not hit.

I am so proud of our kids. They have been outstanding in their response to this. They have been very outspoken and articulate about what they experienced and what they believe should be done to stop this carnage from reoccurring. They have been blunt, and that has been to their credit. We owe it to them to follow their lead!

The voice of these young people is strong, angry and articulate. I’m hearing there will be a national walk-out day for students coming. Many young voices will join those in Florida.

They became quickly active as the national media focused on this tragedy, and that's huge. Hope feeling part of something positive and meaningful will help your son deal with this personally also.
