Adviser says Romney to release 2011 tax return by October 15

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Republican U.S. presidential challenger Mitt Romney plans to make public his 2011 tax return by October 15, a senior campaign adviser said on Sunday, as President Barack Obama's re-election team pressed its criticism of Romney's decision not to disclose more about his personal taxes.

Romney, a former private equity executive who is one of the richest men ever to run for president, has come under pressure for months from the Obama campaign to release more years of tax returns.

He has released his 2010 tax return and estimates for 2011 but does not plan to reveal more years of returns. In April, he requested an extension from the Internal Revenue Service to file his 2011 tax forms, while estimating his tax liability at $3.2 million for last year.

Ed Gillespie, a senior Romney adviser, indicated the former Massachusetts governor would release the 2011 return by October 15, about three weeks before the November 6 election, but refused to say exactly when.

"Look, October 15 is the deadline for the IRS on an extension. We have said as soon as they're ready we're going to release them. And I believe they'll be ready before that," Gillespie told the "Fox News Sunday" program.

For the years during the run-up to the collapse and bailout. He likely 'sterilized' the returns for his campaign years.

It was Ronald Reagan who said, "Trust, but Verify."
Re his tax returns, Mr. Romney has said, "Trust me."
OK.
Now for the "Verify" part.
Release the tax returns, Mr. Romney.
63% of American voters want to see them.
And so do I.

Romney has not shown us exactly one iota of his tax form. His 2010 tax form is incomplete, missing the 990-T form.

Show us the tax form, and stop hiding. Romney continues to shame his father.

everything now. Assuming his taxes reveal that he just cut through mostly legal, but damning loopholes in the tax system that benefit the wealthy, he might be able to ride it out. Everything in an election cycle is a nine days wonder and the election is still a couple of months away. People will be angry that the rich can get away with so much, but Romney's 14% tax rate doesn't seem to be causing the national wide-spread outrage that it should currently. If he released his taxes now, the effect would be blunted by election day. It just makes one wonder, or should, if whatever's in his tax returns is so detrimental, so toxic, that it can't afford to be released under any circumstances.

If it was merely paying little or no tax, the outrage could probably be handled or at least somewhat mitigated by showing it was legal and, besides, "nobody wants to pay taxes to the gubmint who just gives it to those shiftless (black) people."

Even his shafting of his cult of their vigorish could be "explained" with some complicated razzle dazzle or a "retroactive" tithe (he could send a card of apology and penance to Golob.)

No, I think, as you do, that this is fatally toxic -- earning income through "business deals" with the likes of Mubarak, Gaddafi, or any number of other murderous despots. After all, we now know that's where his seed money for Bain Capital came from.

Sure, mittens, about as complicated as writing a check to your tax attorney. And don't you dare say we're not interested in seeing them - tax returns are something most Americans are familiar with.

“Oh, I’m sure people will talk about it,” Romney said during a debate in Tampa, Florida, last night. “You’ll see my income, how much taxes I’ve paid, how much I’ve paid to charity. You’ll see how complicated taxes can be.”
