Cornyn breaks with Trump: Raising age limit on gun buying wont save lives

Source: The Hill

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the number two Republican in the Senate, criticized President Trump’s proposal to raise the minimum age for gun purchases, saying it wouldn’t “save lives.”

"I think what we want to focus on is things that will actually save lives," Cornyn said Friday, according to CNN. "That's why I think the focus should be on the Fix NICS bill, which is the only bipartisan piece of legislation that can be signed into law."

Cornyn said a bill increasing the age limit on gun purchases, which Trump endorsed earlier this week, would be “difficult to enforce.”

Limits on alcohol have never prevented underage kids from getting their hands on it. There's also the scenario of a sick kid living in a home where an older brother or other family member would have them available. Don't know if they are promoting just the purchase or the possession as well. That would make a difference. Regardless, the NRA will oppose it in any form.

The real cure is to simply outlaw assault weapons. It would only require a slight change to the 1935 Firearms Act and presto, you got your bill.

If we're going to have a knock-down drag-out with the NRA we night as well make it worthwhile.

not america even though many who own assault weapons would love america to turn into a Syria...we americans are going to take america back, perhaps offer the opportunity to those who own assault weapons a one way ticket to Syria...??

Keep your AR, go to Syria....or turn it in

the age limit on getting alcohol doesn't work 100%, we shouldn't even TRY to raise the age limit on gun purchases?

And, if an older brother or other family member has guns in the house, shouldn't they be locked up so that the under age kid doesn't have access to them? Shoudln't the gun owner in the house be held responsible for properly securing their weapons of death? I know I'm probably being naive here. But it makes me crazy when these gun nuts won't even consider restrictions of any kind.

Both DJT and NRA have tried to turn USA into a 3rd world country. No need for assault weapons at all for any citizen!! The only ones that want them have ulterior motives. I believe all guns should be licensed, just like a vehicle, period!!

Daddy gave it to him. Cornyn has a broken clock moment. The rest is just a facade and does nothing to address the real problem.

It should pass, because there ARE flaws in the background check system.

However, we shoulda also raise the age requirement as well.

Is that how we gauge passing laws? Only if they save lives? Will that tax cut save lives?

If it's not a good idea for an 18 year old to buy an AR, then that should be a law.

Besides, no one knows for sure whether it might save lives. It very well might.

Beyond the short memory and lack of 3 brain cells for critical thinking the Congress Critters of the time took action.

THEY BANNED TOMMY GUNS [machine guns] for non-military, with a few exceptions.

That shut down a lot of what the mobs of the day were doing.....mass killings.

Remember the St Valentines Massacre.

Nothing different today for military created weapons of mass destruction AR-15, AK-47, etc., except for one thing.

All the Rethug politicians, when they left home to return to D.C., put there balls in their wife's purse for safe keeping.
