Trump golf club pays $5.45M to settle claims from former members

Source: The Hill

BY LUIS SANCHEZ - 02/24/18 01:47 PM EST

One of President Trump’s golf clubs agreed to pay $5.45 million to settle claims by former members alleging that the club refused to give them their deposits back after they resigned from the club, Reuters reported.

Last February, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra ordered the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla., to pay $5.77 million to the members. Before the announced settlement, the club was scheduled to argue its appeal in May, according to Reuters.

The settlement came after Trump changed the membership rules of the golf club. Trump’s new rules stated that members who wanted to resign from the club — who previously were allowed to golf until their replacements were found — were not allowed to use the club anymore.

The changes justified a return of $4.85 million to 65 members plus interest, according to the district judge.

agree to settle with contractors who worked on his palace in DC? Where is he getting the money to settle these claims, finally? US taxpayers? Well, he will find it impossible to "settle" with Mueller once the dust settles on his Russia, money laundering, tax evasion schemes. Big, bloated, repulsive ass will finally meet someone who can not be shoved around.

The Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., and its owner are under scrutiny by a federal judge. That's because Trump's ownership of it could be a violation of the Constitution's emoluments clause—state and foreign government payments to the hotel could amount to illegal gifts to Trump.

Now the hotel, and its owner, are getting attention for the millions in fines they paid out, right around the inauguration, for not paying contractors who renovated the property. In late January, the hotel paid out more than $3 million to settle liens against, and in "one case, a contractor reached an agreement after receiving a phone call from someone his attorney identified as 'Trump.'"

The largest payment was made to Joseph J. Magnolia, Inc. The family-owned D.C.-based company had filed a lien for $2.98 million on Dec. 21, 2016, for "the unpaid balance for work done" on the hotel, dating from that day back through Sept. 9, 2014, according to court filings. Joseph J. Magnolia, Inc. had done "plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC work, along with the site sewer, water, storm, and water services" per the notice. It also provided the labor and materials required to complete that work.

The company had been featured in a Washington Post article about various liens against Trump's hotel in D.C. that continues to garner a ton of social media notice. In a previous Post article, John D. Magnolia, the company's president, noted that he had voted for Trump and felt the Trumps had been "decent people" to work with. But, he added, "Mr. Trump and Ivanka [Trump, who oversaw the hotel project] and so forth, they are I guess preoccupied by other matters now."[…]

While Magnolia’s company received what appears to be an amicable settlement, another subcontractor for the Trump International Hotel in D.C. did not
. A&D Construction sought $79,700 in unpaid bills for woodwork (including the hotel’s crown molding). Richard M. Sissman, an attorney for the family-owned subcontractor based in Sterling, Virginia, said he had conversations with representatives of the Trump Organization regarding the lien, but not Donald Trump himself. He ended up negotiating with the hotel’s general contractor and reached an agreement around Feb. 22. But it didn’t end particularly well for his client who, unlike Magnolia, had not publicly stated that he supported Trump.

“He didn’t walk away very happy, let me put it to you that way,” said Sissman. “But he needed the money.”

Another company forced to put liens on the hotel was Maryland-based AES Electrical..................

I sure hope nobody gets suckered into their deals.

If I'm an Indian businessman who already owns a hotel, why would I pay the Trump family $1+ million for the privilege of putting his name on my hotel? Oh yeah what can go wrong there?

Remember, Trump claimed when he was pondering firing Mueller that one of the reasons for Mueller's "bias" was a dispute over golf club fees when he quit Trump's club (which is not allowed! NOBODY quits Trump's golf club! He FIRES members!). But apparently Mueller didn't bother following up a request for a refund, so maybe he doesn't get one?

According to a person familiar with the matter, Mueller had sent a letter requesting a dues refund in accordance with normal club practice and never heard back.

This is about his GC in Florida. Sounds like it's standard operating procedure wherever Trump has a Golf Club though. Fleece the members. That's just good business sense.

Why any contractor would agree to do work for this bunch of grifters without getting the cash up front is beyond me.

I guess some people are still impressed by the Trump 'brand' and think he's going to shower them with bonuses and perks. They'll be lucky to see payment of any kind. Trump has done this his entire life. He takes them to court and they withdraw their claims since they'd be paying so much in legal fees it wouldn't be worth it. Trump is a thief, plain and simple.

He previously could just pull money from one of his off shore accounts or fake LLC's but now has to be very careful. All of his properties appear to be over leveraged, even the DC hotel incurred a lot of debt.
