Trump repeats call to arm trained teachers on school campuses

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 02/24/18 02:06 PM EST

President Trump on Saturday reupped his calls to arm highly trained teachers in a bid to prevent school shootings, but said that such decisions should ultimately be left to individual states.

Trump has called for arming teachers a number of times in recent days, arguing that had educators at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. had firearms, they would have "shot the hell" out of a gunman that opened fire on the campus last week.

In a freewheeling speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland on Friday, Trump said that armed teachers would be better prepared than security guards to respond to school shootings, because they "love their students."

The shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School left 17 people dead and 14 others injured. The revelation this week that an armed resource officer at the school remained outside while the shooting took place has raised questions about the efficacy of arming personnel on school campuses.

by the state propaganda machine, state corporations and the state media apparatus, must NOT be allowed to fail. Or the whole state and media will fail....German propaganda 101.

Against that machine we now have the very dangerous March For Our Lives movement and organization.

The state is afraid, they will go all in to support this totally unsupportable meme.

I just love how when his proposals are met with derision, he tries to refine his messaging.

He said the first stupid thing that popped into his head because amazingly, he was not prepared to answer the you-could-it-see-it- coming from a mile away question, "Any proposals Mr President ?"

Insanity is trying to defend batasscrazy nonsense. Utter insanity is the media taking him seriously.

After all, Paul has shown himself to be quite adept at creating millions of dollars out of basically nothing, which is what Trump wants the school districts to do.

Arming teachers -- even only a percentage of them -- is estimated to put another 700,000 guns into circulation. This sounds like an NRA wet dream. First, it's a ton more business for the weapons and ammunition manufacturers, which the reason the NRA exists

Secondly, somebody's got to initially train all those teachers how to use a gun, and who else is better equipped than -- wait for it -- the NRA. (There's an article on this, but it's Breitbart, so I'm not going to link it here.) So there's a potential for hundreds of thousands new NRA members.

Then there's the whole new market for active shooter simulators for teachers, one of which the HHS has already developed. You know more sophisticated versions will be commercially developed. How much more money and time off from teaching is the school district going to lose to proficiency training?

Has anyone talked about protecting teachers from liability when someone other than the shooter gets killed or injured by an errant school-authorized bullet? If a school shooting occurred, you can be sure plaintiff's attorneys would be lining up at the gates signing up new clients as they fled the school grounds. It would be a lawyers' full-employment event.

Trump/GOP/NRA is trying to keep the conversation focused on arming teachers; the kids want to get guns off the streets, and they've got passion and social media -- and now some serious money -- behind their efforts. My bet is on the students.

I taught 1st grade for 15 years before making a career change. I would never have a gun in the classroom. It's insane to think that just by having a gun, it makes you prepared to use it mentally.

We give classifications on how tough a teacher is.

Peon Class - the basic loser - no guns for them

Schwarzenegger Class - Now your cool - good tactical weapons warranted.

Rambo Class - Now were talking - Rocket propelled grenades for you.

You overblown, deplorable, infantile POS....they already ARE highly-trained. They're teachers, you malevolent buffoon. You know....years of post-secondary leading to a career that will demand everything from them - time from their families, time from their own selves, for that matter, and large amounts of it unpaid.

They are even called to pay for supplies out of their own pockets for children that aren't theirs...to put themselves between a madman's gun and children that aren't theirs. Now, you expect them to add "Living Target" to their resumes?

Fuck you and everybody that's unfortunate enough to look like you.

I sometimes think he is a 12 year old boy disguised as a gross, fat, cranky, balding white man.

There is the cost of training, the cost of the weapons, you are going to want at least one semi automatic to meet the fire power out on the street. Then there is the ammo and body armor. I really think if we are going to train our teachers to be body guards, they should be fully armored against attacks. Then a secure location that only adults can access must be found and protected for the weapons and ammo. Probably should have 24 hour protection of some kind on such a ammunition locker. Even Wal-Mart has alarm systems set up around the weapons they sell.

Then there are qualification and testing which is different from actual training. You don't want some old lady who has lost her sharp reflexes shooting at a limber and determined intruder. Then you are going to need to have a communication system separate from the general body of students so you can communicate alerts so teachers can get at their firearms and be ready to shoot to kill.

Then I have to point out you are going to have to seriously up your insurance requirements. What if a teacher mistakes the milk delivery for an intruder? What if a child jumps in front as a teacher fires on an intruder, what if parents sue because their child died and the teacher didn't respond quickly enough? What happens if a child stumbles onto a teacher's weapon and hurts themselves? Anyway you see how your liability insurance better go way up.

And even with all that, teachers will still be killed in the line of duty. So, what about compensating their families for their loss? Police and Military personnel have survivor benefits so should armed teachers. Now after the schools are finished paying for all that, will there be any money left for books?

What an absolutely stupid, idiotic and irresponsible suggestion for an adult to make.
