Russian spies hacked the Olympics and tried to make it look like North Korea did it, U.S. officials

Source: Washington Post

Russian military spies hacked several hundred computers used by authorities at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, according to U.S. intelligence.

They did so while trying to make it appear as though the intrusion was conducted by North Korea, what is known as a “false-flag” operation, said two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

Officials in PyeongChang acknowledged that the Games were hit by a cyberattack during the Feb. 9 Opening Ceremonies but had refused to confirm whether Russia was responsible. That evening there were disruptions to the Internet, broadcast systems and the Olympics website. Many attendees were unable to print their tickets for the ceremony, resulting in empty seats.

Analysts surmise the disruption was retaliation against the International Olympic Committee for banning the Russian team from the Winter Games due to doping violations. No officials from Russia’s Olympic federation were allowed to attend, and while some athletes were permitted to compete under the designation “Olympic Athletes from Russia,” they were unable to display the Russian flag on their uniforms and, if they won medals, their country’s anthem was not played.

The worst example, from my own interest, was the 2014 SOCHI women's figure skating fiasco.

The gold was stolen from Yuna Kim and the whole world knows it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Winter_Olympics_figure_skating_scandal

When a french judge was working with the Russians to elevate the Russian pairs skaters in exchange for the same help from Russian judges for another figure skating event with French skaters.

What is still outrageous is that, not only did they rob Jamie Salé and David Pelletier of their moment, when they finally did give them the gold retroactively, they allowed the Russians to keep their gold too!

I know not every Russian is lying cheat, but their whole society is built on corruption and cheating. I have a brother-in-law who grew up in a Russian satellite country. Every aspect of their life is corrupted. He told me his experience getting his first driving license. He studied hard and practiced when he could, and felt he was ready. So he took the test and was flawless. But got rejected. He practiced more and tried again, same result. Finally someone took him aside and told him how to get the license. Put so much $ into an envelope and deliver it to this address. He did, and the next test try he passed no problem.

I think their whole society is sick and damaged. Putin is like the ultimate mob boss. He's reportedly the richest man in the world but no one knows just how much he has. Ill gotten through kickbacks and blatant stealing from other billionaires that disagreed with him politically. But their society seems to be conditioned after decades (actually centuries) of authoritarian rule. He has probably stolen so much from the Russian people in terms of what they could have built there with all that money. But like in any country, there is a segment that adores a "strong leader" promotes nationalism, orthodox religion, military endeavors, and just saying how great they all are. And its mostly all they know.

But they should be shamed on the world stage. Even after this mild punishment of being allowed to participate but under the banner of OAR, they STILL had, I believe, the only two athletes caught doping in the 2018 games. And now this allegation? They should be outright banned for the next two at least.

But only a segment.

To say "I think their whole society is sick and damaged," is, I think, a bit much. It is, as now also here, the government and that ignorant nationalistic segment.

As of last year, 87 percent of Russians said they had a lot or some confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin's handling of world affairs

Only one other Russian historical figure 'trumps' Putin:

For Russians, Stalin is the ‘most outstanding’ figure in world history, followed by Putin

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/06/26/for-russians-stalin-is-the-most-outstanding-figure-in-world-history-putin-is-next/?utm_term=.770aa5b2e878

Obviously there is a segment, a minority, that has more liberal values, and want to get rid of corruption. But their leaders don't last too long. Or at least are not allowed to run in elections, and set up on bogus charges.

No, Russia has evolved into a mob state where most are happy to kiss the shoes of their godfather. That or they are are just resigned to their fate and afraid of disent. It is what America could look like under a Trump with brains, together with the corrupted election tactics of the GOP. I can only imagine if Trump had any kind of self control, or intellect. If he had avoided the 'bus tape' from coming out, had resisted saying that nazis were good people, and all the other shit he has spewn. For that matter if he had turned in his twitter account upon election. He would have been the GOP's dream candidate! It would have been a cake walk with the National Review even endorsing him. His ability to lie to large crowds without flinching, his fine honed ability to sell snake oil. All he needed was to be able to pretend well enough that he was a 'moderate'.

Then I could see the GOP get really bold. They hold majority of seats of government and the court. They could change the laws to be more like Russia, where Trump could serve out eight years, with the help of a now ingrained corrupted election system and hackable machines with no oversight. Then take a break and have some stooge fill in for four years, and be eligible to run again. And each year more laws made to curtail freedom of protest, abolished net neutrality to shut down liberal news sources, ramp up even more the dominance of RW media. The Sinclair Group would be in on it. Every year it would be more and more difficult to RESIST. All the while doing a 1984 job on the population stoking fears and inventing threats to rally around. Don't think America like any country is not susceptible.

Russians, but given the green light by comrade Trump it will only get worse.

Notice how this would play into Trump's warhawk stance...looks like U.S. intelligence continues to refuse to bow down to anything else but their sworn oaths.

Well, I don't!

That would be a first strike. The Russians would have to retaliate and they have enough nukes to level the planet.

A focused EMP weapon that could be used to target several sites. I dreamed of a low earth orbit platform and thought it was just the stuff of science fiction. It turns out that there is such a thing that can be flown over targets:
